Urgent Boiler Recall Announced Amid Carbon Monoxide Leak Concerns
An urgent product recall has been initiated for a specific boiler model following serious safety concerns related to potential carbon monoxide leaks. The Office for Product Safety and Standards has flagged the Viessmann Vitorondens 200-T / 222-F Oil Condensing Boiler with Vitoflame 300 Oil Blue Flame Burner as presenting a high risk to consumers.
High Risk of Asphyxiation Identified
Testing has revealed that some boilers manufactured between 2021 and 2023 may experience delayed ignition, leading to pressure damage and possible carbon monoxide leaks. This defect could expose individuals in affected buildings to unsafe exhaust gases, significantly increasing the risk of asphyxiation. Authorities have emphasised the gravity of this issue, noting that carbon monoxide is a colourless, odourless gas, making it undetectable without proper alarms.
Safety Measures and Symptoms of Poisoning
The NHS has outlined key symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning, which can vary in severity and may include:
- Headaches and dizziness
- Nausea, weakness, and confusion
- Chest and muscle pain, along with shortness of breath
- Flushing of the face, though this may be less visible on darker skin tones
- Loss of vision and general fatigue
These symptoms often fluctuate, worsening in environments with carbon monoxide presence and improving upon leaving the affected area.
Preventative Actions Recommended
To mitigate risks, experts advise several proactive steps:
- Install carbon monoxide alarms in every room with gas, oil, coal, or wood-burning appliances, ensuring they emit a loud alert upon detection.
- Have heating and cooking appliances professionally installed and regularly maintained by qualified engineers.
- Ensure boilers, heaters, and cookers undergo routine servicing to prevent malfunctions.
- Maintain good ventilation in living spaces and keep chimneys and flues clean and well-maintained.
Viessmann has notified end-users impacted by this recall and has alerted installers to the associated risks. Consumers are urged to check their boiler models immediately and follow safety guidelines to prevent potential harm.
