Popular ice packs sold by Kmart in Australia have been urgently recalled over serious safety fears that they could expose users to a poisonous chemical.
What Products Are Affected?
The recall affects two specific Anko-branded products: the Small Gel Pak (product code 42010777) and the Large Gel Pak (product code 42010784). Kmart has stated these cooling packs, commonly used for treating injuries or keeping cool in hot weather, may contain the hazardous substance ethylene glycol.
Serious Health Risks Identified
Ethylene glycol is a toxic chemical that can cause severe harm if swallowed. Initial symptoms of ingestion can include nausea, vomiting, and abdominal cramps. In more serious cases, it can lead to irreversible damage to the brain, heart, or kidneys, and even death.
Kmart's official statement was stark in its warning, advising customers: 'If you have one of the above products, stop using it immediately and keep out of reach of children. If swallowed, ethylene glycol can cause irreversible injuries or death.'
Sale Dates and Refund Information
The affected products were sold over a very long period. The Small Gel Pak was available from 18 March 2014 until 10 December 2025. The Large Gel Pak was on sale from 11 February 2014 until 10 December 2025.
Customers who have purchased either of these ice packs are urged to cease use at once. They can return the product to any Kmart store to receive a full refund. For further information, Kmart Customer Service can be contacted on 1800 124 125, Monday to Friday from 7am to 6pm (AEST).
