Billionaire venture capitalist Vinod Khosla is reportedly preparing a bid to buy the Seattle Seahawks, according to Sportico. The Super Bowl champions have been under the ownership of the Allen family since 1997, when Paul Allen purchased the team for $194 million from then-owner Ken Behring. Paul Allen, co-founder of Microsoft, passed away in 2018 at the age of 65 due to complications from non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
Current Ownership and Philanthropic Directive
Since Paul Allen's death, his sister Jody Allen has led the Seahawks and the NBA's Portland Trail Blazers, also owned by her brother. However, Paul Allen left a directive to eventually sell his sports holdings and direct all estate proceeds to philanthropic causes. The Seahawks were officially put up for sale just days after quarterback Sam Darnold led the team to victory over the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LX, with the franchise valued at nearly $7 billion.
Khosla's Interest and Background
Khosla, a prominent venture capitalist and recent investor in the San Francisco 49ers, is now working on a bid to acquire the Seahawks. This move would mark a significant expansion of his sports portfolio. The sale process is expected to attract multiple bidders given the team's strong market presence and recent Super Bowl success. More details are anticipated as the bidding process unfolds.
