Sir David Attenborough has expressed his gratitude for the overwhelming number of birthday greetings he has received as he approaches his 100th birthday. The renowned broadcaster and natural historian will be celebrated by the BBC with a 90-minute live event at the Royal Albert Hall on Friday, which coincides with his centenary.
Celebrity Guests and Musical Tributes
The event will feature appearances from notable figures such as Sir Michael Palin, Steve Backshall, and Chris Packham, who will join in honouring Attenborough's life and career. The BBC Concert Orchestra, conducted by Jérôme Kuhn, will perform original compositions from Attenborough's landmark series, accompanied by dramatic wildlife stories and spoken reflections from public figures and conservation advocates.
Attenborough's Message of Thanks
In an audio message released ahead of his birthday, Attenborough said: 'I had rather thought that I would celebrate my 100th birthday quietly, but it seems that many of you have had other ideas. I have been completely overwhelmed by birthday greetings, from pre-school groups to care home residents, and countless individuals and families of all ages. I simply can't reply to each of you separately, but I'd like to thank you all most sincerely for your kind messages, and wish those of you who have planned your own local events: Have a very happy day.'
The BBC has described the event as the 'climax of a week of special events and broadcast programming in honour of Sir David'. The show will begin at 7.30pm and will focus on Attenborough's groundbreaking career at the forefront of natural history storytelling, taking audiences on a journey through a century of exploration and discovery in the natural world.
