Rugby Australia Posts Record Surplus Thanks to Lions Tour
Rugby Australia Posts Record Surplus on Lions Tour

Rugby Australia (RA) has announced a record surplus of AU$70.6 million (£37.42 million) in its 2025 financial accounts, largely propelled by the highly lucrative British and Irish Lions tour. This remarkable turnaround comes after the organisation posted a record deficit of AU$36.8 million (£19.5 million) in the previous year.

Financial Turnaround and Future Investments

The surplus has enabled RA to repay a private loan ahead of schedule and accelerate plans for an investment fund designed to secure the sport's long-term future. RA boss Phil Waugh stated, "We have made great progress in ensuring the proceeds of our major events – including last year's record-breaking British and Irish Lions tour – will set up our game to thrive long-term."

Revenue Breakdown

RA generated total revenue of AU$262.2 million (£138.98 million), significantly boosted by the Lions tour and match-day takings of AU$146.8 million (£77.8 million). A total of 373,168 fans attended the Wallabies' seven home Tests in 2025, averaging 53,308 per match – an all-time Australian record for a non-home Rugby World Cup season. RA expects further financial gains from hosting the World Cup in 2027.

On-Field Challenges

Despite the strong commercial performance, the Wallabies, coached by Joe Schmidt, struggled on the pitch. After losing the Lions series 2-1, they finished third in the Rugby Championship with a 2-4 record and endured a winless tour of Europe, ending the season ranked eighth in the world. Australia will host Ireland, France, and Italy in the inaugural Nations Championship Tests in July.
