Millions of UK drivers are facing a financial squeeze as motoring costs continue to climb. The average motor insurance premium rose marginally in the first quarter of this year to £560, just £1 more than the previous quarter but £20 less than the same period in 2025. However, the cost of vehicle repairs is escalating sharply, driven by higher parts prices, increasing vehicle complexity, and supply chain disruptions.
Insurance Premiums and Claims
According to the Association of British Insurers (ABI), insurers paid out £2.9 billion in claims during Q1. Vehicle repair costs rose by 3 per cent to £1.9 billion, while the average accidental damage claim increased by 8 per cent to £3,699. The ABI attributed the rise in repair costs to a combination of factors, including higher prices for spare parts, the growing complexity of modern vehicles, and ongoing supply chain issues that extend repair times.
Fuel Costs Soar Amid Iran Oil Crisis
In addition to insurance costs, UK drivers have been hit hard by rising fuel prices. The Iran oil crisis has cost motorists an estimated £2 billion in higher fuel costs over just over a month. Petrol alone has added £500 million to drivers' expenses, while diesel has increased by £1.5 billion. Diesel vehicle owners have borne the largest financial burden, as diesel prices have risen more sharply than petrol.
The Treasury has also benefited from the price hikes, receiving over £336 million in additional VAT revenue due to the increased fuel prices. This windfall has sparked debate about whether the government should intervene to ease the pressure on drivers.
Impact on Households
The combination of rising insurance premiums and fuel costs is putting significant strain on household budgets. Many families are already struggling with the cost-of-living crisis, and these additional motoring expenses are adding to their financial worries. Consumer groups are calling for action to help drivers, including measures to increase competition in the insurance market and reduce fuel duty.
As the situation develops, drivers are advised to shop around for the best insurance deals and consider fuel-efficient driving practices to mitigate the impact of rising costs.
