A woman has been left stunned after searching Boohoo for 'black funeral dresses' - and the results have sparked a discussion among other shoppers on social media.
Background
Wearing black to a funeral has long been considered standard practice - but most would agree there's a distinct boundary between respectful attire and something utterly inappropriate. That's precisely why one woman found herself utterly bewildered after browsing Boohoo for outfit inspiration - only to discover options that appeared better suited to a night on the town than a sad farewell.
The Search
Detailing her experience online, the woman recounted how she'd searched the website for funeral-appropriate garments, anticipating something modest and subdued. Instead, she stumbled upon a dedicated section labelled 'Funeral' - which pledged to help customers 'feel strong on a difficult day'. Yet the items featured painted an entirely different picture.
Writing on Mumsnet, she posted: 'Boohoo must go to very different funerals to me... Looking for something to wear to a funeral, and found a page on Boohoo specifically titled Funeral... Either things have changed quite a bit since I last attended one, or they might want to tweak their algorithm.'
Reactions
Amongst the recommendations was a see-through black dress that concealed virtually nothing, with the model's undergarments plainly visible beneath the fabric. The ensemble appeared far more suitable for a beach getaway or celebration than a conventional service. Yet that wasn't the end of it. When she conducted the same search for men's attire, she encountered another baffling choice – a model sporting what resembled a black dressing gown. Predictably, the post rapidly ignited discussion, with numerous users equally baffled by the retailer's selections.
- One commenter quipped: 'Personally I'd be delighted if someone rocked up to my funeral in a transparent black dress. It would, at least, be memorable.'
- Another added: 'Maybe for the funeral of a particularly bohemian soul. But at the funeral of a regular person, it would be viewed as outrageous. I wouldn't even wear that to a party.'
- A third adopted a more playful tone, writing: 'There's not enough see-through clothes at funerals in my opinion. I'm all for naked grieving.'
Broader Context
Some questioned whether conventions surrounding funerals are evolving - or whether this was merely an ill-judged algorithm at work. One user remarked: 'The problem is that many people assume everyone will be sad at a funeral... but that's not always the case.' While funeral dress codes can differ according to cultural background and individual wishes, the majority still favour understated, dignified clothing - rendering these recommendations particularly startling.
