Engineer Kills Wife, Self in Pennsylvania Murder-Suicide

A tragic murder-suicide has shaken a quiet Pennsylvania community after a young engineer shot his wife dead in her father's home before fleeing into nearby woods and taking his own life.

Details of the Incident

Madeline Spatafore, 25, was discovered deceased after law enforcement responded to an emergency call on Graywyck Drive in Seven Fields, approximately 20 miles north of Pittsburgh, during the early hours of Tuesday. Her husband of 19 months, Ryan Hosso, 26, was later located in the wooded area behind the residence with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Hosso's parents, Don and Jennifer, alerted authorities around 1:15 a.m. after he confessed to the murder and threatened suicide. Local police immediately initiated a search of the surrounding woods, but Hosso took his own life before he could be apprehended.

The Couple's Background

Hosso and Spatafore were high school sweethearts who began dating in early high school and married in Wooster, Ohio, on September 21, 2024. At the time of the incident, the young couple was residing with Spatafore's father, John, a senior project manager at construction firm PJ Dick, Trumbull and Lindy in Pittsburgh. The family had moved from Ohio in 2006 and purchased the three-bedroom home for $319,000.

Spatafore was a neurocritical care physician assistant at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh, having graduated summa cum laude from Duquesne University. Hosso worked as an applications engineer at BalTec, a riveting machine manufacturer. The couple attended different universities after high school—Spatafore at Duquesne and Hosso at Akron University—but reunited after graduation and became engaged before their wedding.

Investigation Ongoing

Pennsylvania State Police have not disclosed a motive for the murder-suicide or detailed the events leading up to it. The investigation is being handled by the state police, as the murder occurred in Seven Fields under the Northern Regional Police Department's jurisdiction, while Hosso's suicide took place just over the border in Cranberry Township. Trooper Bertha Cazy stated, 'We're going to be here as long as it takes to process the scene. That does take an extended amount of time, just with the different organizations that we have here.'

Neighbors reported waking to find police swarming the usually quiet suburban street and yellow tape cordoning off the lawn. John Spatafore could not be reached for comment. Photos of the couple through the years show them attending prom together and at high school graduations in 2019.
