Heineken Invests £44.5M to Upgrade Hundreds of UK Pubs
Heineken Pumps £44.5M into UK Pub Upgrades

Heineken has announced a substantial investment of more than £44 million to upgrade hundreds of its pubs across the United Kingdom. The Dutch brewing giant confirmed that the funding will be directed towards refurbishing 647 pubs within its 2,350-strong Star Pubs estate throughout this year.

Investment Details and Job Creation

The programme includes a complete overhaul of 108 pubs, each costing £145,000 or more, and is expected to generate approximately 850 new jobs. Major refurbishments will concentrate on creating distinct areas for drinking, dining, and sports or entertainment, with a particular emphasis on sports-focused venues in anticipation of the World Cup.

New Pub Model for Younger Adults

Heineken will also trial a contemporary pub model designed to attract younger adults. The concept will transition from offering morning coffee and workspace during the day to hosting DJs, open-mic sessions, and live music in the evenings. The majority of pubs included in the programme are owned by the group but operated independently by licensees.

Since 2018, Heineken has invested a total of £328 million into British pubs. Work has already commenced at 52 locations, including eight projects where boarded-up pubs are being reopened.

Industry Challenges and Tax Burden

The investment comes as the pub sector continues to grapple with rising costs, reduced consumer spending, and increases in National Insurance employer contributions. Pubs received additional business rates support from the Government last month to help alleviate cost pressures.

Lawson Mountstevens, Star Pubs’ managing director, urged the Government to reduce the tax burden on pubs. He stated: “Pubs are a fantastic institution, admired the world over. We’re proud to be a leading investor in Britain’s independently operated locals and to be playing a part in securing their future along with our dedicated and entrepreneurial licensees.

“Investment is essential if pubs are to remain a first choice for people looking for somewhere to socialise. It is also critical for pubs needing to generate extra revenue to fund the sustained increases in running costs they’ve faced in recent years.

“However we can only do so much; the root-and-branch reform of business rates that the industry has been calling for over many years is urgently required, as well as a lowering of the burden of taxation on pubs – including VAT and beer duty.

“We are calling on the Government to support us in bringing out the best in the Great British pub. Importantly, this investment will create flexible job opportunities in communities across the country and give many young people their first taste of the world of work.”
