Personal finance guru Martin Lewis has issued a stark warning to UK households, branding the tumble dryer as a "demon appliance" that significantly drives up energy costs. With energy bills projected to increase sharply, Lewis emphasises the urgent need for consumers to reconsider their usage of this common household device.
Impending Energy Bill Surge Forecast
Analysts at Cornwall Insight predict a substantial rise in household energy expenses, driven by escalating wholesale prices linked to Middle East conflicts. The Ofgem price cap from July to September is expected to reach £1,973 annually for typical dual-fuel households, marking a £332 increase—equivalent to a 20% jump from April's cap. This surge underscores the critical importance of energy-saving measures in the current economic climate.
The High Cost of Tumble Dryer Usage
In advice shared on his BBC Radio 5 podcast, which remains highly relevant today, Lewis highlighted the tumble dryer as a primary culprit in energy consumption. He revealed that each load typically costs around £1, making it an expensive convenience. "Do you know what the real 'demon appliance' is in most people's houses—the one that you don't want to use because it's really expensive? Tumble dryers," Lewis stated. He recommended alternatives such as drying clothes on an airer outdoors or minimising tumble dryer use to curb expenses.
Dehumidifiers as a Cost-Effective Alternative
Lewis also addressed listener concerns about indoor drying leading to dampness, suggesting dehumidifiers as a more economical solution. "Dehumidifiers take water out of the air rather than use the heating, and they're much lower wattage appliances than standard heating," he explained. By reducing moisture without the high energy draw of tumble dryers, dehumidifiers can offer a cheaper way to manage laundry drying in homes, particularly during colder months.

Beyond appliance advice, Lewis provided several practical strategies to lower energy bills. He advocated for using reflective panels behind radiators on external walls to prevent heat loss, noting that even tin foil can serve as a makeshift option. "Sheets of reflective material can be placed behind radiators. Crucially, this is on external wall radiators, so the heat doesn't escape," he advised.
Other recommendations include turning off radiators in unused rooms, adjusting boiler flow rates to potentially cut gas bills by over 9%, and checking televisions for low-energy settings. Lewis also urged households to conduct draft detection walks, sealing any gaps to improve insulation. "Be a draft detector—what drafts can you spot as you walk around your house? And then try, if you can, to seal them up," he suggested.
