Tyrrells to Discontinue Vegetable Crisps as Uttoxeter Factory Faces Closure
Tyrrells Axes Vegetable Crisps, Factory Closure Planned

KP Snacks has confirmed plans to shut down the Tyrrells factory in Uttoxeter, Staffordshire, leading to the discontinuation of its vegetable crisps range. The decision follows a sustained slump in demand for the product and significant losses in export volumes, marking a major shift for the snack giant.

Factory Closure and Product Axe

The Uttoxeter site, which is dedicated to producing Tyrrells vegetable crisps, will be closed as part of the proposal. While KP Snacks did not immediately disclose the exact number of employees affected, the company stated it would look to minimise redundancies during the closure process. A spokesperson emphasised that no final decisions have been made, but the consultation is underway, with support offered to colleagues at the uncertain time.

Decline in Demand

The brand's vegetable crisps range has experienced a prolonged decline in demand, prompting the move. KP Snacks stressed that this does not affect other Tyrrells potato crisp ranges, which continue to perform strongly in the market. The company highlighted that the closure is a response to changing consumer preferences and export challenges.

History of Tyrrells

Herefordshire potato farmer William Chase founded Tyrrells in 2002, turning to crisp-making after supermarket pressures wiped out his farming margins. The crisps are known for their unique flavour, derived from special potato varieties like Lady Rosetta. Chase sold the brand to private equity firm Langholm Capital in 2008 for £40 million, and it has since changed hands multiple times before being acquired by KP Snacks owner Intersnack from The Hershey Company in 2018.

Global Reach

Tyrrells crisps are sold in dozens of countries, with key markets outside the UK including the United States, Canada, France, and Germany. Despite this international presence, the vegetable crisps line has struggled to maintain its appeal, leading to the current restructuring efforts by KP Snacks.
