Aldi, the budget supermarket recently crowned Britain's cheapest for the third consecutive month by Which?, has announced a significant update across all its UK stores this April. Shoppers are being urged to make what the retailer describes as an 'essential' donation—pet food—to support families grappling with the soaring costs of pet ownership.
National Pet Month Initiative
With April marking National Pet Month, Aldi has rolled out a targeted campaign calling on customers to contribute pet food at its in-store community donation points. These donation boxes, typically positioned near checkouts, are now being repurposed to collect pet supplies, a move that addresses a growing need highlighted by recent research.
Rising Costs of Pet Ownership
According to the PDSA animal wellbeing report, a staggering 86% of pet owners report that the cost of keeping a pet has increased. This financial pressure is often overlooked in broader cost-of-living discussions, yet it places significant strain on household budgets. Aldi's initiative aims to bridge this gap by facilitating donations that will be distributed to local charities and community groups.
Luke Emery, national sustainability director at Aldi UK, emphasized: "Pets are part of the family, but the cost-of-living conversation rarely acknowledges them. In reality, increasing costs are putting extra pressure on the whole household budget, including everyday essentials like pet food. By making it simple for customers to donate in-store, via our existing partnership with Neighbourly, we hope to support local communities and help ensure families can continue to care for their much-loved pets."
Partnership with Neighbourly
Aldi has collaborated with Neighbourly since 2019, a partnership that has already donated the equivalent of over 50 million meals to charitable causes nationwide. This collaboration not only helps ensure food reaches those facing hardship but also contributes to reducing food waste. The pet food donations will be channeled through this established network, guaranteeing efficient distribution to those in need.
Aldi's Market Position
This charitable update comes as Aldi solidifies its reputation as Britain's most affordable supermarket. Which? recently named it the cheapest for March, with a typical basket of 95 widely-purchased items costing £171.32 at Aldi, narrowly beating rival Lidl (£172.31 for Lidl Plus cardholders). Other major supermarkets like Asda, Tesco, and Sainsbury's followed, with Morrisons, Ocado, and Waitrose trailing behind.
The initiative underscores Aldi's commitment to community support beyond just low prices, positioning the retailer as a responsive player in addressing contemporary social challenges. Shoppers are encouraged to participate by dropping off pet food donations during their next visit, contributing to a cause that directly impacts local families and their beloved animals.
