In a groundbreaking move for the UK retail sector, Co-op has unveiled its new 'flexi checkouts', a smart till system designed to dramatically cut queue times and enhance customer convenience. This initiative marks the first deployment of such technology by a British supermarket, positioning Co-op at the forefront of retail innovation.

How Flexi Checkouts Work

The flexi checkouts, supplied by American financial and retail technology firm Diebold Nixdorf, feature adaptable tills that can seamlessly switch between self-service and cashier-operated modes based on customer preference. This dual-functionality aims to cater to diverse shopper needs, whether they seek quick transactions or personal interaction with staff.

Rollout and Features

Co-op plans to install these checkouts in 150 stores across the UK by April 2026. Beyond their flexible operation, the screens display price savings, deals, and promotions, and have potential future applications such as facilitating parcel collections. This rollout is part of Co-op's broader strategy to invest in its physical store estate, reinforcing its presence in high streets and local communities.

Executive Insights

David Tyas, Co-op's Head of Operations, Support Centre, and Innovation, emphasised the company's commitment to creating stores that serve as community hubs. "We know many customers enjoy engaging with our friendly colleagues in store, while for others a quick and easy transaction is key," he stated. "Our latest checkout technology replaces our existing tills with the added flexibility to do both, supporting our commitment to enjoyable shopping experiences for all."

Brother Expansion Plans

This innovation coincides with Co-op's aggressive store expansion programme. The retailer announced that 18 new or upgraded stores will open in the first quarter of 2026, including a flagship location in Willowbrook Park, Didcot, Oxfordshire. Additionally, stores in Eastern Green, Coventry, and Ealing, London, will reopen following refurbishments.

Kate McCrae, Co-op Operations Director, highlighted the company's focus on local engagement. "We're focussed on creating local stores which are more than just a shop – they are a hub locally that contribute to local life and conveniently meet the needs of communities," she said. "Our stores have a focus on quality products and value for our members and customers."

Apprenticeship Initiative

In a related development, Co-op has pledged to create 7,000 matched apprenticeships by 2030 through a £70 million investment via its Levy Share service. This commitment underscores the retailer's dedication to workforce development and community support, aligning with its broader corporate social responsibility goals.
