BBC viewers have expressed widespread disappointment following the premiere of the new series of Blankety Blank on BBC One, with many taking to social media to voice identical complaints about the show's content and presentation.
Fans Unimpressed with Episode's Questions
Host Bradley Walsh returned to television screens on Saturday, April 11, to helm the latest instalment of the popular quiz show, welcoming a panel of six celebrities to assist contestants in filling in missing blanks for prizes. The celebrity lineup included Richard Ayoade, Alex Jones, Stephen Bailey, Nadia Jae, Gyles Brandreth, and Roisin Conaty.
However, the episode failed to resonate with a segment of the audience, who criticised the questions as "ridiculous" and lacking the charm of previous seasons. On X, formerly known as Twitter, one fan lamented, "Not funny anymore really. Maybe past its sell by date and celebs aren't good #BlanketyBlank."
Social Media Backlash Grows
Additional viewers echoed similar sentiments, with one noting, "The blank questions don't seem to be like they used to be. #blanketyblank," while another commented, "Most of the questions are so ridiculous with no obvious answer. No wonder they don’t score. #blanketyblank." A further post highlighted, "#BlanketyBlank questions are a lot more random than there used to be," underscoring a perceived decline in quality.
Bradley Walsh's Tenure and Celebrity Challenges
Bradley Walsh, also known for hosting ITV's The Chase, took over as presenter of Blankety Blank six years ago, succeeding the late Paul O'Grady. Throughout his tenure, he has featured numerous high-profile guests, such as Joanna Lumley and Alison Hammond, though not all celebrities have been eager to participate.
In a previous interview with The Sun, Walsh revealed attempts to recruit former Doctor Who stars Jodie Whittaker and Mandip Gill, stating, "They won’t have it because they’re frightened to make themselves look a bit silly but that’s what it’s all about. For me, you've got to come on and have some fun. You really do."
Show's Legacy and Future Episodes
Blankety Blank, which originated in the 1970s under host Terry Wogan, continues its format of celebrities aiding contestants with humorous fill-in-the-blank questions. The new series promises appearances from notable figures like Jonathan Ross and Julian Clary, with Walsh praising their contributions, saying, "Well, loads! Jonathan Ross especially, he's really the only person who's a non-comedian but he’s got a wealth of experience. He’s so funny and Julian’s obviously steeped in this sort of stuff. So his dry remarks, his dry wit is perfect for the show, it really is."
The show is scheduled to continue with new episodes, airing on Saturday, April 18, on BBC One and available for streaming on BBC iPlayer, as fans await to see if future instalments address their concerns.
