Decathlon's BuyBack Scheme Turns Unwanted Sports Gear into Instant Cash
Decathlon's BuyBack Scheme: Swap Sports Gear for Cash

Unwanted sports items no longer need to gather dust in storage, as a simple swap can transform them into instant cash through a popular retail initiative. Decathlon's BuyBack scheme enables shoppers to exchange outgrown or unused sports gear for immediate financial benefit, supporting both personal budgets and environmental sustainability.

How the BuyBack Scheme Works

Customers can bring items such as bicycles to any Decathlon outlet across the United Kingdom, where specialists will assess the condition and provide an instant valuation. To enhance convenience, Decathlon has introduced an online "quick quote" tool, allowing individuals to view estimated worth—often up to 45% of the original retail price—before completing full registration.

Payment Options and Easter Bonuses

For 2026, Decathlon is offering a one-hour bank transfer payment option, delivering actual cash directly to customers. Alternatively, those seeking to maximise their return for future sports purchases can opt for a gift card redeemable in-store or online.

From March 23 until April 12, participants receive an extra 20% bonus on top of their trade-in value. Additionally, any customer completing a buyback in-store over the Easter weekend will be entered into a prize draw to win one of five £1,000 Decathlon vouchers.

Eligibility and Accepted Items

The service accepts all manufacturers, from well-known brands like Specialized and Trek to independent shop labels. Customers must be Decathlon members at the time of exchange, with membership being quick, straightforward, and free to join.

This initiative reflects Decathlon's ongoing commitment to circularity, aiming to reduce sports waste by allowing returns from up to 15 different sports categories. Eligible items include fitness equipment, racquet sports gear, golf clubs, horse riding accessories, GPS watches, camping gear, kayaks, paddleboards, and more.

Refurbishment and Resale Process

Returned items are serviced and refurbished by Decathlon specialists before being resold through the Second Life range at discounted prices. This approach not only makes sports more accessible to a broader audience but also promotes the circular economy of sports goods.

Growing Popularity and Impact

Since its launch in 2023, the BuyBack scheme has seen over 10,000 items returned, with popularity soaring as UK consumers increasingly embrace the circular economy to support active lifestyles. In the past year alone, specific searches for bike buy-backs have surged by an impressive 300%, as commuters and families explore smarter ways to upgrade their equipment.

Chris Allen, Sustainability Leader at Decathlon UK, commented: "This year, our BuyBack service offers customers instant cash for their unwanted or outgrown bikes, helping their pockets as well as our planet. With our new one-hour bank transfer and special Easter bonuses, we are providing the flexibility and value needed to turn unused gear into new adventures."
