Lidl Unveils Major Expansion with 50 New Stores and 2,000 Jobs
Lidl has announced a significant expansion plan, committing to open more than 50 new stores across Great Britain over the next 12 months. This ambitious initiative is set to create approximately 2,000 new jobs, marking a substantial boost to local employment and the retail sector.
£600 Million Investment Fuels Growth
The expansion is part of a broader £600 million investment strategy by the discount supermarket chain. Lidl is actively seeking new freehold, leasehold, and long leasehold properties to establish these stores, with a focus on enhancing its footprint nationwide. This move underscores the company's robust growth trajectory and confidence in the British market.
Key Locations and Summer Openings
Among the highlighted locations for the new stores are Abbots Langley near Watford, Warrington in Cheshire, and Thornbury in Gloucestershire. These sites are scheduled to open this summer, bringing Lidl's affordable offerings closer to more communities. The selection of these areas reflects a strategic approach to regional development and accessibility.
Leadership and Community Impact
Ryan McDonnell, Chief Executive of Lidl GB, emphasized the positive impact of this expansion. "As we grow, we want to positively impact our British communities. We're not just opening doors, we're unlocking regional growth," he stated. McDonnell added that the expansion translates directly into high-quality jobs and provides British suppliers with the certainty needed to invest in the future, advancing Lidl's social purpose of making affordable, healthy food accessible to everyone.
Government and Employment Support
Employment Minister Kate Dearden welcomed the investment, noting, "This kind of investment is exactly what we want to see from big employers – creating thousands of good jobs that pay fair wages and boost the standard of living in communities across the country." This endorsement highlights the alignment between Lidl's plans and government objectives for economic growth and job creation.
Recent Pay Rises and Financial Performance
This announcement follows Lidl's recent pay rise for its staff, with entry-level pay increasing to £13.45 per hour nationwide, rising to £14.45 with length of service. In London, new starter pay will increase from £14.35 to £14.80, reaching £15.30 with tenure. The supermarket, which employs over 35,000 workers, stated that this pay rise represents a further £29 million investment in its workforce.
Record-Breaking Sales and Customer Growth
Lidl's expansion comes on the heels of impressive financial performance. Recent figures show a 10% surge in sales over Christmas, with nearly 51 million customers shopping at the discounter. The UK business generated more than £1.1 billion in turnover in the four weeks leading up to Christmas Eve. Shopper numbers rose 8% year-on-year to a record high, attracting almost four million more customers than the previous year.
During the festive period, Lidl sold 11,000 tonnes of seasonal produce in the final week before Christmas Eve, a 70% increase year-on-year. Items like easy-peeler clementines saw sales rise by nearly 40%, indicating strong consumer demand. Ryan McDonnell commented, "2025 was a record-breaking Christmas for Lidl – with more customers choosing to shop with us than ever before. By continuing to invest in low prices and champion British food, all without compromising on quality, we've seen loyalty soar."
With over 1,000 stores already operating across Britain, Lidl's latest expansion reinforces its position as the fastest-growing bricks-and-mortar supermarket, poised to offer outstanding value and accessibility to an even broader customer base.
