Lidl Clears Final Hurdle for First Supermarket Pub in Dundonald
Lidl Wins Approval for First Supermarket Pub in Dundonald

Lidl Moves Forward with Groundbreaking Supermarket Pub Plans

Lidl is poised to make retail history by opening its first-ever pub inside a supermarket, following the rejection of a legal challenge and the submission of final planning amendments. The innovative venture is set for the store in Dundonald, just outside Belfast, marking a significant upgrade to the shopping experience.

Legal Victory and Planning Progress

Last year, Lidl triumphed in a High Court battle over plans to convert part of its Dundonald supermarket into a public house. Planning permission was initially granted in April 2025 for a change of use from retail to pub, along with a new shop front. This week, the supermarket chain submitted a non-material change application to Lisburn and Castlereagh City Council's planning department to address circulation and display issues arising from the integration of the pub into the existing building.

The application includes inserting a new fire door, making alterations to the pub shop front, and reorganising the pub floorspace. A Lidl representative explained that these changes aim to provide an uninterrupted line of shelf space in the supermarket aisle while retaining the existing fire door, albeit with shelving placed in front of it. Additionally, the pub design has been refined with extra joinery detailing, reorganisation of back-of-house areas, and a new permeable paved area at the front.

Overcoming Opposition and Financial Commitment

In January last year, Mr Justice Colton dismissed an appeal by rival trader Philip Russell Ltd against Lidl being granted a provisional licence for the bar. The judge noted that Lidl had made a bona fide application and planned to invest at least £410,000 in fitting out the pub, alongside an off-sales area. He emphasised that Lidl expects the pub to be profitable and meets all statutory requirements, with no good reason to refuse the application.

This legal clearance and the latest planning submission underscore Lidl's commitment to pushing ahead with the project. While the chain has stated it has no further updates at this stage, the application is now under consideration by planners, indicating that shoppers could soon enjoy a pint at their local Lidl.

The move represents a bold step in retail innovation, blending grocery shopping with hospitality in a single location. If approved, the Dundonald store will set a precedent for future supermarket developments, potentially transforming how consumers interact with retail spaces.
