Matalan Announces Fourth UK Store Closure in 2026

Fashion and homeware retailer Matalan has permanently shut another of its UK stores this week, continuing a trend of closures in the challenging retail landscape. The outlet at South Lakeland Retail Park in Kendal, Cumbria, ceased operations on Tuesday, April 7, 2026.

Series of Closures Across the Country

This latest shutdown represents the fourth Matalan store to close in the UK this year. Earlier closures included:

  • The Core Shopping Centre in Leeds, which closed on February 24
  • Station Business Park in Carlisle, closed on March 7
  • North Valley Retail Park in Colne, closed on March 7

A Matalan spokesperson addressed the Kendal closure, stating: "Our store at South Lakeland Retail Park will close in April. Our priority now is to support our colleagues. We are working closely with all those affected and, where possible, exploring alternative positions."

Investment and Refurbishment Plans

Despite these closures, Matalan is pursuing an ambitious refurbishment strategy. The company plans to refurbish 40 of its outlets throughout 2026, supported by a £25 million funding injection from investors. This capital is earmarked for accelerating store upgrades and enhancing digital operations, with the chain reporting a return to sales growth in early 2026.

The spokesperson further explained: "As part of the normal course of business, we occasionally close some stores, while exploring opportunities for openings in other locations. Our first priority is to support our colleagues and we are working closely with all those affected. Customers can continue to shop our full range of products via our website and app, or in our 220 Matalan stores across the UK."

Broader Retail Sector Challenges

Matalan is not alone in facing retail difficulties. Towards the end of February, Lakeland Leather announced closures of its Kendal, Carlisle and Gretna branches. A spokesperson for that company described the decision as 'difficult' and attributed it to expiring leases.

"Like many retailers, we are operating within an increasingly challenging trading environment, with rising costs and lower footfall continuing to impact parts of the high street," the spokesperson added.

Local Impact and Response

Peter Brendling, Kendal Business Improvement District Manager, commented on the Matalan closure: "Kendal BID is saddened to see another national retailer close its doors in Kendal. Particularly, one that is associated with this area. Without branches, retailers open themselves up to much greater online competition."

He continued: "Whilst it is not good to have empty shops on the high street, Kendal is fortunate to have a strong community of independent retailers, offering great service and unique products."
