M&S Closes 14 Cafes: Full List of UK Locations

Marks & Spencer has confirmed the closure of 14 cafes across the United Kingdom, delivering a significant blow to shoppers who frequent these in-store dining spots. The decision affects locations that have already shut or are scheduled to close imminently, as the retailer shifts focus towards enhancing its food retail space.

Strategic Shift in Store Layouts

One of the confirmed closures is in Congleton, Cheshire, where M&S regional manager Katie Whelan explained the rationale behind the move. "We recognise that many customers desire access to a broader selection of M&S Food products," she stated. "Following a thorough review of our Congleton store, we have decided to repurpose the café area to offer increased product variety and elevate the overall shopping experience."

Whelan acknowledged the potential disappointment among loyal patrons, assuring that store teams remain committed to providing excellent service. This closure aligns with a broader trend in the supermarket sector, with competitors like Morrisons also scaling back in-store amenities such as florists and cafes in recent months.

Expansion Amidst Closures

Despite the cafe shutdowns, M&S is not retreating from the market. The company has unveiled an ambitious plan to open 500 new stores in the future, targeting areas where it currently lacks a presence. Immediate openings are slated for Northwich, Abingdon, and Stonehaven, with additional stores in Farnham and Northampton expected to launch in spring and summer 2026.

A notable development is the upcoming branch in Godalming, which will become M&S's largest standalone food store. Recent openings in Cannock and Bath have already welcomed customers, and the retailer is actively scouting for sites capable of delivering 18,000 square feet of trading space (25,000 square feet gross) across the UK.

Leadership Insights on Growth Strategy

Alex Freudmann, Managing Director of M&S Food, highlighted the positive performance of new food stores as a catalyst for expansion. "The robust success of our recent M&S food store launches fuels our confidence to explore additional locations nationwide, from Elgin to Exmouth," he remarked.

Freudmann added, "With over twenty stores set to open or undergo modernisation by the end of the financial year, we are accelerating our pace. Our team is focused on identifying new sites for large M&S Food stores, ensuring we deliver the right stores in the right places, coupled with an unparalleled shopping experience, product range, and availability for our customers."
