UK New Car Registrations Rise 3.4% in January, Marking Strongest Start Since 2020
UK New Car Market Grows 3.4% in January

The UK's automotive sector has kicked off 2026 with encouraging momentum, as new car registrations climbed by 3.4% in January compared to the same period last year. According to the latest data released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), a total of 144,127 new cars were registered last month.

Strongest January Performance Since Pre-Pandemic Era

This figure represents a notable increase from the 139,345 new cars registered in January 2025, marking the industry's most robust January performance since 2020. That year preceded the widespread implementation of coronavirus restrictions, which significantly disrupted global supply chains and consumer demand.

Electric Vehicle Market Share Experiences Monthly Dip

However, the data revealed a contrasting trend for pure battery electric new cars, which captured a market share of 20.6% in January. This figure represents their lowest monthly market share since April 2025, indicating a shift in consumer purchasing patterns at the start of the year.

The SMMT provided context for this dip, noting that it followed a period of strong demand at the end of the previous year. During that time, manufacturers were actively pushing to meet crucial regulatory targets, a dynamic that the trade body stated will have affected the January market.

This early-year snapshot suggests a complex landscape for the UK automotive industry, balancing overall growth with evolving trends in electric vehicle adoption. The figures underscore the sector's ongoing recovery and adaptation in a post-pandemic economic environment.
