London Welcomes 2026 with Spectacular Fireworks Despite Freezing Temperatures
100,000 Brave Freezing London for 2026 Fireworks

London welcomed the year 2026 with a stunning pyrotechnic spectacle over the River Thames, as an estimated 100,000 revellers braved near-freezing conditions to witness the event.

A Celebration of Togetherness and Triumph

The dazzling display, which lit up the capital's skyline shortly after midnight, was themed around unity and celebrated the major achievements of the preceding year. Mayor Sadiq Khan emphasised that the theme was "togetherness," stating his belief that diversity is a fundamental strength for the city and the nation.

The fireworks were synchronised to a soundtrack featuring hits from artists like Sabrina Carpenter and Ed Sheeran. The show also included voiceovers from well-known figures such as Celia Imrie and Alison Hammond.

Honouring a Year of Sporting Success

The narrative of the display paid tribute to several key British and European sporting victories from 2025. Among the feats highlighted were:

  • England’s Women’s Rugby World Cup triumph.
  • The Lionesses successfully retaining the UEFA European Championship.
  • Team Europe's win in the Ryder Cup.

Hogmanay Returns to Edinburgh

Meanwhile, in Scotland, Edinburgh's famous Hogmanay celebrations made a triumphant return. Over 40,000 attendees enjoyed a street party, live music, and their own fireworks display, marking a vibrant comeback after the event's cancellation the previous year.

The celebrations across the UK's capitals demonstrated a resilient and joyful public spirit, with thousands choosing to mark the start of 2026 collectively outdoors, despite the significant chill in the air on the night of Wednesday, 31st December 2025.
