Brits Flock to Hanoi as Searches Soar 103% to Escape Rain

Britons have endured weeks of relentless rain, prompting many to seek an escape from the dreary conditions. While sunny European destinations are close by, data reveals a growing appetite for more distant locales. According to travel search engine Kayak, flight inquiries for routes to Hanoi, Vietnam's capital, have skyrocketed by 103 percent.

Surge in Searches for Vietnamese Getaway

This remarkable increase is specifically noted for travel planned between February and March, compared to the same timeframe last year. Hanoi offers a compelling alternative to the UK's chilly dampness, with average temperatures hovering around a pleasant 24°C during these months.

Affordability Drives Popularity

The city's reputation as one of the world's most budget-friendly destinations is a key draw. Numbeo data highlights everyday costs: a local beer costs approximately 25,000₫ (72p), a soft drink around 12,076.92₫ (35p), and a three-course meal for two typically totals 800,000₫ (£22.90).

Travel writer Hugo Brown recently documented his experience in the Daily Mail, detailing how he managed a full day in Hanoi—including accommodation for one night and three meals with a drink—for just £19.60.

Strategic Savings on Airfare

Acting swiftly can yield significant savings on flights. Currently, return fares to Hanoi are averaging £628 this week, but waiting until mid-March could see prices jump to around £1,071—a difference of nearly £450.

Shift Away from Traditional Sunspots

Meanwhile, interest in classic winter-sun destinations closer to the UK has waned slightly. For instance, searches for Arrecife in Lanzarote have decreased by 11 percent compared to last year.

Rise of Other Long-Haul Options

Other far-flung locations are also gaining traction. Colombo has experienced a 20 percent year-on-year rise in search interest, while Cancún has seen a 14 percent increase.

Expert Insight on Travel Trends

Kayak travel expert Rachel Mumford commented on the trend, stating, 'Our search insights show Brits are prepared to travel further for sunshine, but value still plays a huge role in where they book.'

She elaborated on Hanoi's appeal, noting, 'Vietnam stands out because it combines reliable warm weather with low everyday costs once you arrive, making a long-haul trip feel far more affordable.' Mumford also highlighted the advantage of flexibility, adding, 'We're also seeing that travellers who can be flexible with when they fly are able to unlock significant savings by travelling earlier rather than waiting until later in the season.'
