Celestyal's Arabian Gulf Cruise Transforms Family Winter Sun Holidays
It had been just ten minutes, and my daughters were utterly captivated by a pod of dolphins leaping through the turquoise waters beside us. This magical moment felt a universe away from our typical rainy February half-terms back in England. While such scenes might be expected in the Caribbean, we were actually cruising the Arabian peninsula with Celestyal Cruises.
Overcoming Initial Doubts About Winter Sun Cruises
Previously, I harboured reservations about the feasibility of a winter sun cruise with school-age children. The prospect of travelling long distances during the February half-term, risking jet lag, seemed daunting. However, a four-night round trip sailing from Abu Dhabi with our 11 and 13-year-old daughters, alongside my wife Danielle, has profoundly shifted our perspective.

Navigating the Journey to Abu Dhabi
The first hurdle for any winter sun cruise is reaching the embarkation port. Our adventure began with a seven-hour flight from London Heathrow to Abu Dhabi. We were relieved to secure a family-friendly morning departure with Etihad Airways, arriving in time for dinner and avoiding the exhaustion of overnight flights.
Flying economy felt surprisingly premium, with ample leg room and comfortable amenities like soft blankets. This reinforced the importance of starting a cruise well-rested, especially in a region demanding high energy levels.
Pre-Cruise Adventures on Yas Island
Before boarding, we spent a day exploring Yas Island in Abu Dhabi. Home to Warner Bros World, this massive indoor theme park provided a perfect escape from the heat. We enjoyed nostalgic rides in zones like Cartoon Junction and Bedrock, met Batman in Gotham City, and experienced short queues, allowing us to complete most attractions by early afternoon.
Life Aboard the Celestyal Discovery
Our Arabian adventure continued aboard the Celestyal Discovery, a ship accommodating 1,360 passengers that strikes a balance between small and mid-size vessels. Its boutique atmosphere featured numerous lounges and bars, easy access to sun beds, and a relaxed pace devoid of the chaos typical on megaships.
Initially, our daughters missed the towering waterslides and 24-hour amenities of larger ships. Yet, they soon embraced the slower rhythm, enjoying chicken gyros at the Greek Deli, delicious dinners, and affordable ice cream at Fig & Honey.
The smaller ship size offered distinct advantages, including easier participation in activities like evening karaoke and attentive bar service crafting mocktails and molecular cocktails for adults. Greek-inspired decor added a charming touch throughout the stairwells.
Immersive Port Experiences in Ras Al Khaimah and Khasab
Celestyal emphasises immersive, port-intensive itineraries, which proved energising rather than overwhelming. In Ras Al Khaimah, a bumpy Jeep safari took us deep into the desert, with thrilling ascents and descents in a Toyota Land Cruiser, followed by a memorable camel ride.
Our daughters declared it the best day ever, a sentiment echoed in Khasab, Oman. Known as the Norway of Arabia, we boarded a dhow boat expecting fjords but were delighted by dolphins swimming alongside us. We later dived into calm waters, mimicking the playful mammals we had just observed.
A Transformative Family Experience
Reflecting on photos from decadent milkshakes to desert vistas and dolphin encounters, our four-day cruise felt worlds away from the region's skyscrapers. It confirmed that the journey is well worth it for unforgettable family memories, challenging any lingering doubts about winter sun cruises.
