Prague's Christmas Market Crowned Europe's Cheapest with £2 Pints
Prague's Christmas Market: £2 Pints & £74 Hotels

For British travellers seeking a magical yet affordable festive getaway, a clear winner has emerged. According to research by airport transfer experts Hoppa, Prague in the Czech Republic has been crowned the cheapest Christmas market destination in Europe this year.

A Festive Feast for the Senses on a Budget

The analysis, which scrutinised accommodation costs, Tripadvisor reviews, and even the price of a pint, places Prague at the top for value. The figures are compelling: the average cost for a three-star hotel is just £74 per night, while a refreshing pint of beer will set you back a mere £2.17.

Journalist Jackie Annett, who visited the city's Old Town Square market, confirms its enchanting appeal. Dominated by the Gothic spires of the Church of Our Lady before Týn and a towering 20-metre Christmas tree, the square transforms into a winter wonderland. The air fills with the scent of Trdelník (chimney cake) and mulled wine, alongside the sound of traditional Czech carols.

More Than Just a Market: Affordable Indulgence

The market is not only visually stunning—often cited as one of Europe's most photographed festive spots—but also kind to your wallet. Lined with chalets selling hand-painted marionettes and local crafts, visitors can enjoy a hearty dinner with drinks for between 250-400 CZK (approximately £8 to £14). Street food options are even more budget-friendly.

Traditional dishes like rich Goulash, Svíčková (beef in a creamy sauce), or Vepřo knedlo zelo (pork with dumplings and sauerkraut) are readily available. These can be washed down with local beer, mulled wine, or the popular tea-based spirit, Tatratea.

An Accessible Slice of History

One of Prague's greatest charms is its accessibility. Located just a two-hour flight from the UK, with advance return fares available from around £27, it offers an incredible sense of escape. Stepping into the Old Town Square, with its historic Astronomical Clock, feels like travelling back in time.

The market runs annually from late November until early January, providing ample opportunity for a pre- or post-Christmas visit. With over 4,811 attractions in the city to explore, it's a destination that promises a full festive itinerary without breaking the bank.
