Visit Wales has unveiled an innovative new meditative podcast series designed to transport listeners to the heart of Wales from any location across the globe. The initiative, titled 'Chill Cymru', offers a collection of guided meditative podcasts and films that promise a "multi-sensory escape to Wales' most beautiful locations".
Launch on St Dwynwen's Day
The series was officially launched on St Dwynwen's Day, which fell on 25 January 2026. This date is recognised as Wales' national day of love, making it a fitting occasion to introduce a project centred on llonyddwch (stillness), myfyrdod (reflection), and hwyl (joy).
Immersive Soundscapes and Narration
Narrated by BBC Radio 1's Sian Eleri, who hails from Caernarfon, the series features what Visit Wales describes as "immersive natural soundscapes" combined with "thoughtful storytelling". The aim is to create an intimate and transportive experience that encourages listeners to slow down, listen deeply, and connect with the rhythm of Cymru.
Six Unique Journeys Across Wales
The 'Chill Cymru' series comprises six distinct meditative journeys, each set in a different iconic Welsh location:
- The golden sands of Three Cliffs Bay
- The fragrant lavender fields of Cefnperfedd Uchaf
- The mountainous terrain of Pen y Pass
- The wildflower meadows at Wern-y-Cwm Farm
- The tranquil waters of Cardiff Bay
- The serene woodland of Cwmcarn Forest
According to Visit Wales, each journey blends evocative narration with organic soundscaping, allowing listeners to feel the "texture of the landscapes and cadence of the Welsh language" on a deeper level.
Part of the Wider Hwyl Campaign
'Chill Cymru' forms part of Visit Wales' broader Hwyl campaign, which champions the emotional, sensory, and joyful connections that visitors can encounter in Wales. The Welsh word 'hwyl' doesn't have a direct English translation but denotes a deep state of joy that comes from being fully immersed in the moment.
Similar to the Danish concept of 'hygge', which describes cosiness and contentment, 'hwyl' is often associated with communal activities, music, and the arts, though it can be experienced across many different contexts.
Official Endorsement
Rebecca Evans, the economy secretary with responsibility for tourism, commented: "2025 will celebrate the joyful things that make us distinctively Welsh and can only be experienced here in Wales. We want to share our warm 'croeso' and unique 'hwyl' with the world and invite them to not just see but feel, taste and truly experience the 'must do' things we have on offer."
The tourism board hopes this innovative approach will help potential tourists connect with Wales in a more profound way, even before they set foot in the country, by offering a taste of its natural beauty and linguistic heritage through digital means.
