US President Donald Trump has announced the removal of tariffs and restrictions on whiskey and bourbon, a move he said was made "in honor of the King and Queen" of the United Kingdom. The announcement came shortly after King Charles and Queen Camilla departed Washington, D.C., following a whirlwind state visit that included stops in several states.
Trump's Announcement on Truth Social
In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump wrote: "In Honor of the King and Queen of the United Kingdom, who have just left the White House, soon headed back to their wonderful country, I will be removing the tariffs and restrictions on whiskey having to do with Scotland’s ability to work with the Commonwealth of Kentucky on whiskey and bourbon, two very important Industries within Scotland and Kentucky."
Trump added that the decision had been long desired by many, highlighting the significant cross-border trade, particularly concerning the wooden barrels used in production. He remarked, "The King and Queen got me to do something that nobody else was able to do, without hardly even asking! A wonderful Honor to have them both in the U.S.A."
Royal Visit Details
King Charles and Queen Camilla made a final stop in Virginia before concluding their US tour. The King is scheduled to visit Bermuda before returning to the United Kingdom. The state visit included meetings with political leaders and cultural engagements across multiple states, strengthening diplomatic ties between the two nations.
The tariff removal is expected to benefit both Scottish whiskey producers and Kentucky bourbon distilleries, fostering greater collaboration and trade. Industry experts have welcomed the move, noting it could boost exports and create economic opportunities on both sides of the Atlantic.
