The automaker has identified a problem with the transmission range sensor in certain F-150 models equipped with a six-speed automatic transmission. According to a safety recall report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), some of these pickup trucks may experience an intermittent selection signal from the transmission range sensor to the powertrain control module. This malfunction can result in a temporary, unintended downshift into second gear.
This abrupt downshift may cause a sudden reduction in wheel speed for a brief period. In specific driving conditions, such as on wet or slippery surfaces, this could lead to the rear tires sliding until the vehicle's speed decreases, compromising stability and control. Ford has acknowledged that this defect has been linked to two reported injuries and one accident, highlighting the serious safety implications of the issue.

The recall specifically targets F-150 light trucks manufactured between March 12, 2014, and August 18, 2017.
