Ryanair has announced a significant change to its airport procedures, requiring passengers checking in luggage to arrive earlier at all airports. The airline will now close its check-in and bag drop services 60 minutes before scheduled departure, a notable increase from the previous 40-minute deadline. This new policy is set to take effect from 10 November 2026, impacting operations across all Ryanair airports.
Reasons Behind the Deadline Extension
According to Ryanair, the primary goal of this adjustment is to provide passengers with additional time to navigate airport security and passport control processes. By extending the deadline, the airline aims to reduce the number of missed flights, which have been a growing concern due to increased travel volumes and operational delays. The change is expected to benefit the approximately 20 per cent of Ryanair passengers who typically check in luggage, ensuring they have a smoother and more reliable travel experience.
Response to EU Entry-Exit System Delays
The move is partly a strategic response to delays experienced by some passengers at passport control, particularly those related to the EU entry-exit system. Ryanair has noted that these delays have contributed to flight disruptions, prompting the need for earlier check-in times. To further streamline operations, the airline is also installing self-service kiosks at over 95 per cent of its airports before October 2026, allowing for quicker and more efficient passenger processing.
Operational Adjustments and Passenger Impact
In preparation for the new deadline, Ryanair will open its check-in desks earlier to accommodate the extended timeframe. This adjustment is designed to minimise inconvenience for travellers while enhancing overall airport efficiency.
