A 38-year-old father from Stafford has admitted in court to causing the death of his three-month-old son.
Court Hearing and Charges
Gareth Stark appeared before a judge at Birmingham Crown Court on Monday, where he pleaded guilty to manslaughter. He also admitted a separate charge of battery.
The court heard that the tragic incident led to the death of his son, Leon Stark. The baby was taken to hospital on 12 October 2023 after falling ill at a house in Stafford. He passed away eight days later, on 20 October.
A Tragic Outcome
Medical evidence confirmed that Leon's death was the result of a head injury inflicted by his father. Following the hearing, Staffordshire Police issued a statement detailing the charges and the heartbreaking sequence of events.
Detective Inspector Lisa Holland, from the force's Major Investigations Department, commented on the case. She described it as "truly tragic" and stated that the thoughts of the investigation team remain with everyone impacted by Leon's untimely death.
Ongoing Protection and Sentencing
DI Holland emphasised the continued commitment of police and partners to protect children from harm and to prevent similar tragedies. She highlighted the importance of safeguarding vulnerable young lives.
Gareth Stark is now awaiting sentencing, which is scheduled to take place at Stafford Crown Court later this year. The court will determine his punishment after considering all the details of this devastating case.
