Tragic Discovery in Search for Missing Christmas Day Swimmers
A body has been found during the ongoing search for two swimmers who disappeared on Christmas Day off the coast of Devon. The discovery was made at Sandy Bay, Exmouth, around 8.45am on Tuesday, according to Devon and Cornwall Police.
Details of the Incident
The individual is believed to be a 47-year-old man who vanished while participating in a traditional Christmas Day swim at Budleigh Salterton. While formal identification is still pending, his next of kin have been informed and are receiving support from authorities.
The man encountered difficulties at Budleigh Salterton Beach on Christmas Day alongside 63-year-old antiques dealer Matthew Upham, who remains missing. Emergency services were initially called to the scene at 10.25am on Christmas Day following concerns for people in the stormy waters.
Emergency Response and Recovery Efforts
During the initial incident, several individuals were safely recovered to shore and checked by paramedics, with some taken to hospital as a precautionary measure. However, two men – one in his 40s and another in his 60s – could not be located at that time.
Superintendent Ryan Doyle expressed the gravity of the situation, stating: "This discovery is very sad news following the upsetting and tragic incident on Christmas Day. We have spoken with his family and we are continuing to support them through this difficult time."
Family Statements and Tributes
In a statement released on his company's Instagram page, Matthew Upham's family wrote: "Our family is heartbroken by the loss of our beloved family member, Matthew Upham, who was reported missing on Christmas morning. Matthew is deeply loved and will be forever missed."
The family extended their gratitude to emergency services, particularly the RNLI and coastguard, for their dedication, professionalism, and tireless efforts during the search operation.
Singer Kate Bush, a close friend of Mr Upham for three decades, paid tribute to him on her website, describing him as "extraordinarily kind, thoughtful and lived life to the full." She noted that despite being a strong swimmer with extensive kayaking experience, "he understood that the sea should be respected."
Ongoing Investigation and Support
Both families have requested privacy as they navigate this difficult period. The search for the second missing swimmer continues, with authorities maintaining their support for all affected families.
Superintendent Doyle added: "The family of the second missing man has also been informed and are being supported. Our thoughts remain with them."
