Three doormen have admitted killing a man they had just ejected from a bar in Doncaster, dramatically changing their pleas to guilty during a court hearing this week.
Fatal Altercation Outside Pub
Mark Rowing, 37, Dwayne Watson, 44, and David Williams, 30, became involved in an altercation with 30-year-old Jamie Kelly outside a Doncaster pub on May 1, 2022. The confrontation occurred shortly after the bouncers had thrown Kelly out of the establishment.
Serious Injuries and Hospital Death
Jamie Kelly sustained serious injuries during the incident and was rushed to hospital for emergency treatment. Despite medical efforts, he died the following day from his injuries.
The three doormen had previously denied a charge of manslaughter through gross negligence, but reversed their position during a hearing on Tuesday, entering guilty pleas that surprised court observers.
Legal Proceedings and Sentencing
Rowing, Watson and Williams have been released on bail ahead of their sentencing at Sheffield Crown Court, scheduled for April 30. The court will determine appropriate punishment for their admitted role in Kelly's death.
Police Investigation and Family Impact
Detective Chief Inspector Andy Knowles commented on the case, stating: 'Jamie Kelly and his family have been at the heart of our extensive investigation since the moment we received the first call to the scene, and I hope today's developments can begin to provide a sense of closure for everyone who knew and loved him.'
The detective added: 'We await the sentencing in April and ask that the family's privacy is respected as they continue to grieve.'
The investigation into the fatal incident has been ongoing since May 2022, with police conducting extensive inquiries into the circumstances surrounding Kelly's death. The guilty pleas represent a significant development in the legal process that began nearly two years ago.
This case highlights the serious responsibilities facing security personnel in licensed premises and the potential consequences when altercations escalate beyond reasonable force. The sentencing in April will determine the judicial response to this tragic loss of life.
