A 28-year-old man has appeared in court accused of murdering a much-loved father during a violent burglary at his home in Coventry.
Tragic Discovery in Aldrich Avenue
Anthony Priestley, 53, was found with extensive knife wounds at his address on Aldrich Avenue in the early hours of November 18. Emergency services were called to the property at approximately 4am after receiving a panicked call from Mr Priestley's partner, who reported he had been stabbed.
Paramedics fought to save him but were unable to do so, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The court heard that the defendant, Alexander Neilson, allegedly entered the property and stabbed Mr Priestley in the doorway of his bedroom before following him inside and inflicting several more wounds.
Court Appearance and Charges
Alexander Neilson, of no fixed abode, appeared at Coventry Magistrates' Court charged with murder and aggravated burglary. The 28-year-old defendant wore a black and grey tracksuit and was led into the dock by two security guards.
During the brief hearing, Neilson spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth, and last address. Prosecutor Sarah Lawrence outlined the case, stating that Neilson was allegedly 'asking for drugs and money' during the incident and left with a bag of cash.
Defence lawyer Cath McMillan indicated that her client would be pleading not guilty to both charges. Chief Magistrate Michael Priest remanded Neilson in custody and ordered him to appear at Warwick Crown Court on Tuesday, November 25.
Family Tributes and Emotional Scenes
The family of Anthony Priestley, who were not present in court, released a moving tribute through West Midlands Police. They described him as 'Anton' and expressed their devastation, saying: 'We loved you so much and we cannot imagine that we're never going to see you again. Our love for you will never end.'
His daughter paid a separate tribute, thanking him for 'all the lovely memories' and signing off as 'your loving daughter'. Meanwhile, a dozen of Neilson's family members attended the hearing, with one shouting 'love ya' as he was led away after thumping his chest.
The court heard that the men were known to each other, adding another layer of tragedy to the case that has left a Coventry community in shock.
