Drug Driver Sentenced to Over 11 Years for Fatal Crash After Fleeing Scene

Elliot Bristow, a 36-year-old father-of-five from Newport, South Wales, has been jailed for 11 years and three months after causing the death of his friend Olivia Lewis, 24, in a horrific car crash. The incident occurred in the early hours of August 7, 2024, when Bristow lost control of his Skoda Kamiq, crashing into a wall between Magor and Newport.

Fatal Night of Drinking and Drug Use

Cardiff Crown Court heard that Bristow had been drinking vodka mixed with lemonade and smoking cannabis spliffs while driving around South Wales that night. He was more than double the 30mph speed limit, estimated to be traveling at 65-66mph when the crash happened around 12:05am.

Prosecutor Emma Harries described how Bristow had been swerving between lanes, with passenger Ffion Lloyd-Perkins telling him to "chill out" before he lost control. The vehicle flipped onto its side, trapping Olivia Lewis in the back seat.

Cowardly Flight and Arrest

Instead of helping his injured friend, Bristow fled the scene, running approximately a mile away. Police officers found him hiding in a bush with the assistance of a police dog handler. When arrested, he immediately lied to officers, claiming "I wasn't even driving."

Judge Paul Hobson condemned Bristow's actions, stating: "In the immediate aftermath of this collision and as one of your passengers was dying, your priority was yourself; first trying to persuade Ffion to lie and say you weren't the driver, saying it wasn't your fault, and then fleeing from your actions."

Victim's Family Devastated

Olivia Lewis was described by her family as their "beautiful daughter, sister, granddaughter, niece, aunty, and friend" who was "kind, caring and funny." In a heartbreaking victim statement, her mother Kelly said: "Olivia wasn't the only one who died that night, I did too. The only difference is that I am still breathing."

The family added: "She was our little rock when we needed her. She would go out of her way to help anyone in need. Olivia was a quiet girl, but was the life and soul of any party; she loved to sing and dance, and her smile would light a room. We have lost our little angel, and we have a hole in our heart that can never be filled."

Legal Consequences and Medical Revelations

Bristow pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving. Roadside tests showed he was under the drink-drive limit but more than double the legal limit for cannabis. The court also heard that Bristow had failed to disclose a previous epilepsy diagnosis to the DVLA, leading to his license being revoked after the crash.

Defense barrister David Maunder told the court: "He is ashamed at his conduct and like everyone else, wishes he could undo it. He has no recollection of the moments immediately before or after the crash."

In addition to his prison sentence, Bristow was banned from driving for 14 years and six months and must pass an extended test before regaining his license. He must serve at least two-thirds of his sentence behind bars.
