Transgender Attorney's Courtroom Meltdown Results in Contempt Arrest and Firm Closure
In a dramatic courtroom confrontation, a transgender civil rights attorney erupted into a frenzy, screaming "I can't breathe" as he was arrested for contempt of court following a furious argument with a female judge. The incident, which occurred on February 5 in Pontotoc County, Oklahoma, saw attorney Rob Hopkins growing increasingly irate with Judge Laurie Jackson during a clash over a legal ruling.
Heated Exchange Escalates into Physical Struggle
The conflict began when Hopkins raised his voice at Judge Jackson, demanding she "point me to the exact paragraph" in a ruling document. Jackson responded sharply, warning, "Stop, stop stop! You interrupt me one more time and you are being held in contempt. You can wipe that smirk off your face." Hopkins fired back, "I don't have a smirk on my face. I do not."
As tensions mounted, Hopkins pointed his finger in the judge's face, insisting, "I was not done with my argument." He then appeared to throw his phone on the ground in protest, later claiming it fell accidentally when reprimanded by Jackson, who called his behavior "entirely inappropriate."
Arrest and Distress During Detainment
The situation deteriorated further when Hopkins's opposing attorney raised an objection about a client's open warrant, prompting Hopkins to interrupt with, "That is not true, that is not true." Judge Jackson, appearing stunned by his constant pushback, declared, "I am not going to tolerate this from you, sir." After ordering Hopkins to stop shouting, she ended the hearing and placed him in contempt.
As court deputies moved to detain him, Hopkins grew emotional, screaming and wailing while struggling against restraint. He pleaded, "Do not hurt me, do not hurt me," and hyperventilated as he was wrestled to the ground, repeatedly shouting, "I can't breathe, I can't breathe." During the arrest, he demanded a female police officer, yelling, "Get a female officer now! Get a female officer now!" while also asking bystanders to call 911.
Background and Aftermath of the Incident
According to reports, the case involved Hopkins's client failing to appear in court due to a pending protective order in another county. The argument reportedly started off-camera when Judge Jackson admonished Hopkins for using the word "butt" in court while quoting a bailiff. Following the arrest, Hopkins was held on a $25,000 bond.
In the aftermath, Hopkins announced the closure of his law firm, Hopkins Law and Associates, PC, on February 11. In a video statement, he explained that the incident led him to end his legal career, citing concerns for his and his family's physical safety. He suggested potential grounds for a discrimination lawsuit but noted he could not release details at the time.
The Daily Mail has reached out to Hopkins for further comment, but no additional statements have been provided. This incident highlights intense courtroom dynamics and the personal repercussions of legal confrontations.
