A father arrested over his young son's tragic death following a horrific car crash has pleaded to speak with his mother after being charged with manslaughter. Samuel Ian Paterson, aged 24, made this emotional request as he appeared in court on Friday, four months after his three-year-old son Caden succumbed to head injuries at a police station.
Charges Filed Against Both Parents
Paterson and the boy's mother, Aneshia Daisy Case, 23, have both been charged with manslaughter and drug trafficking in connection with Caden's death. Their son was critically injured when the family's white Mazda veered off the road and crashed into bushland north of the Gold Coast on October 25.
Witness Response and Police Efforts
A witness observed the car swerve off the roadway and promptly rushed the mother and Caden to the Beenleigh Police Station. Officers at the station immediately attempted CPR, but unfortunately, the young boy could not be saved, according to police reports.
Paterson fled the accident scene and was later located at a nearby address with a one-year-old boy who remained uninjured in the crash. After an extensive investigation spanning several months, both parents were formally charged with manslaughter and appeared in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Friday.
Court Proceedings and Legal Uncertainties
Appearing via video link on the new manslaughter and drug trafficking charges, Paterson seemed uncertain when questioned about his need for legal aid, leading to an adjournment of the case until March 30. 'I need to talk to my mum,' he told the court. 'I was going to probably pay for a lawyer.'
Paterson has been in custody since the accident, facing separate charges prior to this development. The manslaughter charge against Case was mentioned separately in the Brisbane court on Friday. Case, who is also charged with unlicensed driving, did not appear for the brief mention, and her matter was remanded until Monday with an order to appear in court.
Investigation Complexity and Allegations
Police allege that Case was behind the wheel at the time of the accident, though they have declined to comment on the specific cause of the fatal crash. Detective Acting Inspector Kent Ellis described the investigation as 'extremely complex', involving a forensic reconstruction of the crash, analysis of physical evidence, and scrutiny of CCTV footage.
'Determining who was driving at the time of impact required an extensive amount of investigative work,' he stated on Friday. 'Extensive forensic and mechanical investigations, analysis of physical evidence, extensive analysis of CCTV, digital and additional intelligence enquiries.'
Background and Family Reactions
Police earlier alleged that the mother and children had travelled from the Gold Coast to collect the father from a Beenleigh address before the crash occurred. In October, Paterson was separately charged with domestic violence offences, during which his emotional family vehemently defended him, claiming he would never harm his children.
'We are sick of the f***ing lies,' the boy's grandfather yelled at the media after Paterson's appearance at Southport Magistrates Court in October. 'He loves his kids ... he was trying to protect them. He would never hurt them.'
Notably, family members were absent from the court as the manslaughter charges were mentioned on Friday, adding a layer of solitude to the proceedings.
