Fifth Arrest Made in Urmston Shooting Investigation
Greater Manchester Police have confirmed the arrest of a fifth suspect in connection with a serious shooting incident that occurred in the Trafford district last week. The development marks a significant step forward in the ongoing investigation into the violent episode that has shaken the local community.
Details of the Incident and Arrests
The incident unfolded on Friday, January 16, 2026, shortly after 8.40pm on Higher Road in Urmston. Emergency services responded swiftly to reports of a shooting, where they discovered a 21-year-old man who had sustained a gunshot wound. Paramedics provided immediate treatment at the scene before transporting the victim to hospital for further care.
In a statement issued on Saturday, a GMP spokesperson revealed that the young man remains hospitalised in a "stable but critical condition". The spokesperson also confirmed the latest arrest, which follows four previous detentions made earlier in the week.
The investigation has seen a series of arrests over the past several days:
- A 38-year-old man was arrested on Friday on suspicion of attempted murder and conspiracy to commit murder.
- Four other men, aged 18, 21, 25, and 28, were arrested earlier in the week on identical charges.
- The four individuals initially detained have been released on bail pending further inquiries.
Police Response and Community Impact
Detective Chief Inspector Justin Bryant, leading the investigation from GMP's Trafford district, emphasised the force's determination to tackle violent crime. "We have been continuing in our pursuit of arresting those who we feel were involved in this incident on Friday 16 January 2026," he stated.
DCI Bryant added, "This has led us to arresting five suspects over the course of the week, with the fifth suspect being arrested overnight. I was explicitly clear on Monday when I said this level of violence will not be accepted on our streets and I hope the public can take solace in the fact we have arrested a significant number of suspects in relation to this incident."
The shooting prompted a large police presence in Urmston town centre last Friday, with a substantial crime scene established as forensic teams conducted their work. The incident has raised concerns among residents about public safety and gun violence in the area.
