A Florida couple is confronting serious felony charges after a seemingly friendly Sunday morning pickleball match spiralled into a violent confrontation involving more than twenty individuals. The chaotic incident unfolded at the Spruce Creek Country Club in Port Orange, Florida, on February 8, leading to multiple injuries and significant legal repercussions.
Chaos Erupts on the Pickleball Court
According to authorities from the Volusia Sheriff's Office, the altercation began when Anthony Sapienza, aged 63, accused his opponents of violating a key rule of pickleball by stepping into the non-volley zone, commonly referred to as the "kitchen." The situation rapidly deteriorated as Sapienza allegedly hurled obscenities at the opposing player's wife, igniting a heated exchange.
Violent Escalation and Injuries
Police reports detail that Anthony Sapienza then physically assaulted his opponent, punching him on the left side of the face and striking him with a pickleball paddle. This attack caused significant bleeding and resulted in the victim being transported to a hospital for treatment of a laceration near his eye. Authorities note that the victim has sustained permanent scarring from the assault and is pursuing legal charges.
The violence did not stop there. When the opponent's wife attempted to intervene and assist her husband, Anthony Sapienza allegedly pushed her to the ground. Furthermore, a 70-year-old bystander who tried to break up the fight was punched in the face by Sapienza, leading to profuse bleeding from his nose.

Following the brawl, Anthony and his wife, Julianne Sapienza, aged 51, fled the scene.
