Jealous Man Jailed for Life After Murdering MMA Fighter in Revenge Attack
Kai Pennell, a 35-year-old man from Blaenavon, has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Duane Keen, a 47-year-old boxer and mixed martial arts fighter. The brutal killing occurred in the early hours of October 17 last year, driven by what the judge described as "sexual jealousy and anger." Pennell pleaded guilty to the murder and to destroying property, specifically a white Suzuki Swift belonging to his ex-partner, Rebecca Phillips.

Duane Keen was discovered with severe injuries at an address on Riverside Drive in Blaenavon and was pronounced dead at the scene. Witnesses reported a significant police presence, including armed officers and a helicopter, shortly after 2 a.m. Paramedics and the Wales Air Ambulance also attended, with the street cordoned off during the investigation.
In her sentencing remarks at Cardiff Crown Court, Mrs Justice Stacey highlighted the profound impact of Keen's loss on the community. She noted that thousands attended his funeral, and he was remembered as a legendary figure in Blaenavon for his contributions as an MMA competitor and coach. The judge emphasized that Keen lost his life while trying to protect Pennell's ex-partner, Rebecca Phillips, underscoring the senseless nature of the crime.
Judge's Strong Condemnation of the Defendant
Mrs Justice Stacey directly addressed Pennell, stating, "In your twisted and self-pitying logic, you told Ms Phillips that Duane's murder was her fault. You are wrong to say that; the only person to blame for Duane's murder is you." She clarified that Phillips bore no responsibility for Pennell's actions and should not feel any guilt. The judge imposed a life sentence with a minimum term of 23 years, noting that only such a penalty could reflect the gravity of the murder offence.
Pennell had denied a separate charge of making a threat to kill, but the prosecution decided not to pursue a trial on that count. The focus remained on the murder conviction, which the court handled with solemnity given the victim's stature and the motive behind the attack.

Duane Keen's family paid heartfelt tribute to him, describing him as a great boxer and MMA all-rounder with numerous belts to his name. They said, "He would help anyone who needed it and was always at the end of a phone. He loved being with his dogs and out walking with them. Duane will be greatly missed by all his family and friends. There are no words to express what we as a family are going through." They added that while he was a champ in the ring, he was an even bigger champion to those who knew him personally.
