A major police operation in northern New South Wales has culminated in the arrest of a man suspected of involvement in a violent incident that left one man dead and two others injured.
Chaotic Scene on Rural Road
Emergency services were summoned to a property on Tyalgum Road in Eungella, approximately 10 kilometres west of Murwillumbah, at around 1.25pm on Wednesday. Upon arrival, paramedics discovered a 41-year-old man who had sustained a gunshot wound. Despite their efforts to treat him, the man died at the scene. He has not yet been formally identified by authorities.
A second man, aged 38, later arrived at Murwillumbah Hospital with a gunshot injury. His condition required transfer to the Gold Coast University Hospital for further treatment. Police allege the suspected gunman fled the scene with a fourth individual, sparking an intensive search.
Second Incident and Expanding Investigation
Officers from the Tweed/Byron Police District were then called to a second, related incident on the same road. In this event, a 45-year-old man was allegedly struck by a vehicle, suffering injuries to his chest, leg, and arm. He was transported to hospital under police guard.
Detectives are now working to piece together the precise sequence of events, including how the 38-year-old man was shot and the circumstances that led to the 45-year-old being hit by the car. "Police are waiting to speak with those men to establish the circumstance of how both were injured," a NSW Police statement confirmed.
Road Closure and Arrests Made
In response to the incidents, police closed Tyalgum Road from Kellys Road to Old Lismore Road. Officers, assisted by police dogs, remained at the scene well into Wednesday night conducting searches.
The operation proved successful late on Wednesday night when police located and arrested the man who had initially fled the scene with the suspected gunman. Both he and the 45-year-old man hit by the car are now in police custody. No charges have been laid at this stage, and the investigation remains ongoing. Police are still working to locate the final man involved in the incident.
Authorities are urging anyone with information about the incident to contact Tweed Heads Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
