Man Jailed After Commuter Catches Him Watching Child Abuse Videos on Train
A man has been imprisoned after a shocked train passenger discovered him watching child sex abuse videos in plain view of other commuters. David Johnson, aged 35, was on a train journey from Stafford to London when the disturbing incident unfolded, leading to his arrest and subsequent conviction.
Horrifying Discovery on a London-Bound Train
The alarming event occurred on September 23, 2025, when a fellow passenger noticed Johnson messaging a contact on his mobile phone. The messages included inquiries such as, "What kinds of videos do you like? I have all kinds," followed by the explicit statement, "Just kids videos." Johnson then proceeded to open a video depicting the abuse of a young child, which was visible to the passenger seated behind him.
Stunned by what he had witnessed, the passenger immediately messaged his partner to describe the situation. When he glanced back, Johnson was watching another video showing an even younger child being subjected to abuse. Overwhelmed with distress, the witness moved to a different carriage and promptly alerted the British Transport Police (BTP).
Swift Arrest and Investigation at Euston Station
BTP officers rushed to meet the train upon its arrival at London Euston railway station, where they arrested Johnson on suspicion of possessing indecent images of children. During a search, officers confiscated his mobile phone, which had an indecent image of a child set as its screen wallpaper. In custody, Johnson asked if he could retrieve his property to "delete some stuff," but he offered no comment during subsequent interviews.
Investigators then searched two addresses linked to Johnson, seizing multiple devices for examination. The phone seized at his arrest contained nearly 200 indecent images of children, with 105 classified as category A—the most severe type. Further enquiries revealed two chat transcripts: one showed Johnson communicating with a person he believed was a 13-year-old girl, arranging to meet her for sexual purposes, while the other involved an older woman referencing the same girl, who was said to be unwell. Officers later confirmed that the 13-year-old girl did not actually exist.
Legal Proceedings and Sentencing
Johnson was released on bail while detectives compiled evidence against him, and charges were authorised in December 2025. He pleaded guilty to six counts of making indecent images of children, two counts of attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child, and arranging or facilitating a child sex offence.
At Inner London Crown Court on Wednesday, April 1, Johnson was sentenced to two years and three months imprisonment. Additionally, he received a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) for 10 years and must sign the sex offender register for the same duration.
Police Commend Courageous Witness
BTP Detective Constable Victoria Lowth praised the quick thinking and bravery of the passenger who reported Johnson. She stated, "The actions of that man directly led to Johnson's imprisonment. Behind every image and video Johnson owned is a vulnerable child that has been exploited and abused. Johnson is clearly a danger to children, and we will always strive to make the railway a hostile environment for such offenders."
