Heroic Mother Saves Family from Devastating Tumble Dryer Blaze
A courageous mother-of-three has described how she and her family are "lucky to be alive" after escaping a terrifying house fire sparked by an overheating tumble dryer. The dramatic incident unfolded at their semi-detached home in Riddings, Allestree, Derby, on March 27.
Swift Action Prevents Tragedy
Hannah Foster, 36, was alerted to the danger when her 12-year-old son Kieran rushed into her bedroom, reporting smoke seeping through the floorboards. At the time, Hannah was packing clothes for a camping trip, having just used the tumble dryer for final laundry items.
"I rushed downstairs and was confronted by a wall of flame and smoke," Hannah recounted. "The smoke was choking me, but I managed to wake my boyfriend Tom who was asleep on the sofa. We then woke my other son and I grabbed my two-year-old daughter from our bedroom before dashing outside."
Investigation Points to Accidental Cause
Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed their investigation concluded the most likely cause was accidental, originating from the tumble dryer. Firefighters spent over an hour tackling the blaze, which completely destroyed the conservatory where the dryer was plugged in, along with the kitchen and entire ground floor.
Hannah, a Special Educational Needs teaching assistant, explained: "The fire investigators suggested a child's toy might have fallen behind the machine, causing it to overheat. I'd used that Indesit tumble dryer for years without any problems."
Family Left Without Possessions or Insurance
Despite the terrifying experience, the family emerged physically unharmed, with Tom suffering only singed hair. Paramedics checked Hannah at the scene, confirming she required no medical treatment.
The family now faces significant challenges as they lost all their possessions in the fire and had no contents insurance. Hannah and Tom, who works in construction, are currently staying with relatives while searching for new accommodation.
Community Support Through Fundraising
To help replace their burnt belongings, Hannah has launched a GoFundMe appeal. "We were lucky to escape with our lives," she emphasized, "but everything we owned is gone."
The incident serves as a stark reminder about appliance safety, particularly regarding tumble dryers. Hannah noted she regularly cleaned lint from her machine, highlighting how even well-maintained appliances can pose risks under certain circumstances.
Fire crews used three hose reel jets and one main jet to extinguish the flames, with all occupants safely outside upon their arrival. The family's quick thinking and Hannah's brave actions undoubtedly prevented what could have been a tragic outcome.
