Tragic Murder-Suicide in Victoria's Latrobe Valley Reveals Eerie Details
Disturbing new information has surfaced regarding the final moments of a couple whose lives ended in what appears to be a brutal murder-suicide in Victoria's Latrobe Valley. The bodies of Aaron Hammond, aged 46, and Chamindika Jayawardena, aged 47, were discovered by police inside their McGraths Track residence at Hernes Oak on Monday, sending shockwaves through the rural community.
The Fateful Night
Investigators believe the tragic incident occurred over the weekend, with neighbours reporting they heard two distinct gunshots approximately thirty seconds apart late on Saturday evening. These reports have provided crucial insight into the timeline of events leading up to the grim discovery.
On Wednesday, specialized cleaning crews worked diligently throughout the day to sanitize the heavily bloodstained crime scene. Observers noted cleaners vigorously scrubbing the walls of the lounge area at the front of the property, while their van parked outside served as the only visible indication of the horrific events that had transpired within the home.
A Community in Shock
From the street, the residence appeared deceptively normal with bins neatly positioned next to a carport containing items familiar to rural living. However, this outward calm belied the tragedy that had unfolded within.
Victoria Police have maintained a tight-lipped approach regarding their investigation into the suspected murder-suicide, though detectives have confirmed they are not seeking any additional suspects in connection with the deaths. This suggests authorities believe the incident was contained to the couple themselves.
Troubled Relationship Dynamics
Social media reports from The Red Heart Campaign's Sherele Moody indicate the couple had recently become estranged, with Moody posting: 'She left him. He killed her. Chami Jay was murdered by her former male partner in Hernes Oak, Victoria, over the past few days. He then killed himself. She had separated from him recently.'
Further troubling accounts emerged from acquaintances, with one woman describing Mr Hammond as 'a ticking time bomb' and noting 'the signs were there for many, many years' regarding his allegedly abusive behavior.
The Haunted Hills Connection
The tragedy occurred in the shadow of an area locally known as the Haunted Hills, a name earned through generations of spooky folklore. At the summit lies Yallourn Cemetery, just a stone's throw from a mountain bike track adorned with artwork depicting skulls.
A sign at the base of the hills warns visitors that the area is 'steeped in spooky stories of strange noises, ghost sightings, inexplicable accidents, murder and spooked cows.' Adding to the eerie atmosphere, the toilet block at the bottom of the hills was found splattered with blood on Wednesday, though authorities have not confirmed any connection to the couple's deaths.
A Region Familiar with Tragedy
The Latrobe Valley region has unfortunately witnessed multiple high-profile crimes over the years. Most notably, the area was the center of the tragic Jaidyn Leskie case in 1997, where the 13-month-old boy was found dead in a creek six months after disappearing from Moe, just a 20-minute drive from the current crime scene.
Greg Domaszewicz, who was babysitting Jaidyn at the time, was charged with murder but ultimately found not guilty at trial. The case involved bizarre elements including a pig's head being thrown onto the property and Domaszewicz admitting to cleaning up blood but denying harming the child.
Neighbourhood Accounts
Neighbours of the couple described hearing what sounded like 'fireworks' coming from the property over the weekend. Brenno Amato, who lived nearby, initially thought nothing of the noises until he saw multiple police vehicles at the home on Monday.
'I just thought it was people having a few shots at foxes out the back,' Amato told reporters. 'I didn't really take much to it until Monday when all the cops and everyone was here and we sort of put two and two together.'
Amato described Hammond and Jayawardena as 'a lovely couple who often holidayed overseas' and noted he had last spoken to his neighbour just days before the tragedy. The couple had been together for at least two years according to social media records.
Family and Friends Respond
Mr Hammond's family has declined to comment about the boilermaker's state of mind leading up to his death. On Wednesday, a man believed to be Mr Hammond's older brother, who lived just 20 minutes away, requested privacy when approached by media.
Friends of Ms Jayawardena who travelled from Melbourne on Tuesday to retrieve the couple's cat described her as 'like family.' They joined the broader community in mourning the loss of both individuals.
