New CCTV Footage Emerges in Search for Missing Brazilian Academic Vitoria Barreto
New CCTV Footage Found in Search for Missing Academic

Police investigating the disappearance of Brazilian academic Vitoria Figueiredo Barreto have revealed new CCTV footage that may provide crucial clues in the case. The 30-year-old psychologist vanished over three weeks ago, with her last confirmed sighting at Essex University in Colchester on March 3.

Expanded CCTV Search Yields Potential Breakthrough

Essex Police have expanded their CCTV search in the coastal town of Brightlingsea, where Barreto was last seen. The investigation has focused on the hours between 2.35pm on March 3 and 12.16am on March 4. According to police statements, new footage from private CCTV systems shows a person believed to be Barreto in a field between Back Waterside Lane and Mill Street at 3.33pm on March 3.

Detective Superintendent Anna Granger explained the significance of this discovery: "We have always worked on the likely premise that Vitoria has made her way towards Copperas Road from Hurst Green through this greenspace. Although this footage is captured from a distance, we do believe it is likely to be her."

Timeline of Disappearance

The Brazilian academic was reported missing on March 4 after failing to contact loved ones. Her last known movements include:

  • A 30-minute bus journey from Wivenhoe to Brightlingsea on the afternoon of March 3
  • Previous sightings in the Hurst Green area around 2.35pm on March 3
  • A woman believed to be Barreto seen climbing over a fence and walking alone by the waterfront at approximately 12.16am on March 4
  • The new CCTV footage showing a person in a field at 3.33pm on March 3

International Investigation Challenges

Police face significant challenges in accessing Barreto's banking and communication records, as these are registered outside the United Kingdom. Detective Superintendent Granger confirmed: "Vitoria's banking and communications being registered outside of the UK does pose a challenge and we have sought to gain access to these through the correct channels as quickly as possible."

The investigation has international dimensions, with Essex Police working alongside the Brazilian Embassy and Barreto's family. Granger emphasized: "We know this international work has the support of Vitoria's loved ones and the Brazilian Embassy."

Ongoing Search Efforts

Despite the passage of three weeks since Barreto's disappearance, search operations continue with particular focus on the boatyard area off Copperas Road. Police are working to narrow the CCTV gap between 12.16am and 12.36am on March 4, when a fishing boat was reportedly unmoored from a pontoon.

Physical searches of land, coastline, and water continue alongside the digital investigation. Granger stated: "Although our physical searches of land, coastline and water continue to be finalised, I hope it is clear that our work to find Vitoria has not stopped. We continue to receive reports of sightings, which are followed up with particular focus."

Public Appeal for Information

Police have issued a renewed appeal for information from the public, particularly focusing on potential witnesses who may have seen Barreto in the Brightlingsea area on March 3. Detective Superintendent Granger asked: "Where you in the area at the time and do you remember seeing this woman? It also means, as we have always suspected, that she is likely to have travelled to the greenspace either through Back Waterside Lane or through the residential area immediately to the south of Hurst Green."

The investigation team is particularly interested in building a clearer picture of Barreto's movements during the afternoon of Tuesday, March 3. Anyone with information is urged to contact Essex Police as the search for the missing academic continues.
