A devastating accident in the western Indian state of Maharashtra has claimed the lives of nine members of the same family, including six young children, after the vehicle they were travelling in plunged into an uncovered well on Friday night. The victims, all from the Durgade family, had just attended their school's annual function, where several of the children had performed.
School Celebration Turns to Tragedy
The family had been returning from the annual event at Janta English School in Dindori, approximately 20 kilometres from Nashik city. At the school function, several of the children had danced, and one had been honoured for achieving the highest marks in her class. The six children who lost their lives were identified as Rakhi from class 4, Shraddha from class 7, Shravani from class 5, Shrishti from class 8, Shreyas from class 5, and Samruddhi from class 1. The three adult victims were Sunil, a farmer who was driving the vehicle, his wife Reshma, and Asha, the wife of Anil Durgade.
Long-Standing Safety Hazard
The well, which measures 40 feet deep and was completely uncovered, is situated at the end of a concrete road in an area that has transitioned from farmland to a residential zone over the past two decades. Local residents reported that the well had been a known danger for years, with previous incidents involving a motorcyclist and a cow falling into it, though no formal complaints were ever filed. A dispute between a local landowner and the municipal body over the status of the land had prevented the well from being filled, despite proposals to address the issue earlier this year.
Official Response and Family Outrage
A police officer, quoted by local news outlets, described the situation as "a disaster waiting to happen if any outsider tried to take this route and was unaware of the uncovered deep well." Sachin Durgade, a relative of the victims, expressed the family's intention to seek answers from both the police and local administration once the last rites are completed. "We will also question the administration about why they delayed filling up the well for so long when there were complaints earlier," he stated, highlighting the perceived negligence that contributed to this preventable tragedy.
The incident has sparked outrage in the community, raising serious questions about infrastructure safety and bureaucratic delays in addressing known hazards. As investigations continue, the focus remains on why such a dangerous well was left uncovered for so long, despite clear risks to public safety.
