Thierry Henry Praises 'Special' Michael Olise Amid Liverpool Transfer Speculation
Thierry Henry has lavished praise on Bayern Munich attacker Michael Olise, describing him as a 'special' player following his standout performance in the Champions League. This comes as Liverpool are reportedly considering Olise as a potential replacement for Mohamed Salah, who is set to depart Anfield this summer.
Olise Shines in Bayern Munich's Victory Over Real Madrid
Michael Olise, the 24-year-old French international, delivered a dazzling display in Bayern Munich's impressive 2-1 away win against Real Madrid in the Champions League quarter-finals. Since his £50 million move from Crystal Palace in the summer of 2024, Olise has elevated his game to new heights, and he tormented Los Blancos at the Bernabeu, setting up Harry Kane for the decisive winning goal.
Jamie Carragher hailed Olise's performance as 'one of the very best' he has witnessed from any player this season. Thierry Henry, analysing the match on CBS Sports, broke down what makes Olise such a devastating talent on the pitch.
Henry's Insight into Olise's Unique Abilities
'Michael is a special player. He sees and thinks about the game differently, the way he sees life,' Henry stated. 'When he gets the ball, he sees things that few others can. He perceives the game differently, he sees it more with his brain than his eyes. He tries to imagine what might happen as soon as the ball leaves the goalkeeper. You have to anticipate what’s coming next.'
Henry continued, emphasising Olise's distinctive approach: 'We all know he can dribble. He has his own way of looking at the game and life. That’s why sometimes, off the pitch, people don't understand him. But he’s a pleasant guy, a great guy. He doesn't say much off the field, but when he has the ball, he speaks very well through his play.'
Liverpool's Interest in Olise as Salah's Successor
Olise's remarkable development at Bayern Munich has not gone unnoticed in the Premier League, with speculation mounting that Liverpool could pursue him this summer as a long-term replacement for Mohamed Salah. According to reports from The i Paper last month, Olise is a player the Reds hold a keen interest in as they evaluate options to fill the void left by Salah's impending departure.
The report suggests Liverpool are considering signing two players: one established star and one up-and-coming talent. However, it also notes there are 'doubts' that Olise would consider leaving Bayern Munich, who are currently excelling under manager Vincent Kompany.
Steven Gerrard's Endorsement and Recruitment Challenges
Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has publicly endorsed Olise as his preferred choice to replace Salah. Speaking on talkSPORT, Gerrard admitted: 'The concern if you're trying to replace Salah, like-for-like, there's very few out there. Olise would be one but I don't think he'd be available.'
Gerrard highlighted Liverpool's historical success in player recruitment, stating: 'From experience, being around Liverpool, the recruitment team will have different options, that doesn't necessarily mean like-for-like. When we had to replace Mane for example, we went for signed Diaz who was slightly different, when Suarez or Torres has left, they've had different type of options to replace the players.'
He expressed confidence in the club's ability to manage the transition, adding: 'Liverpool have a fantastic record of replacing top players so I've got every confidence from a recruitment point of view that they'll have different options. They'll have to replace his goal involvements which is extremely difficult because he's been incredible for Liverpool for many years.'
As the summer transfer window approaches, all eyes will be on whether Liverpool can secure a deal for Michael Olise or if they will pivot to alternative targets to succeed the iconic Mohamed Salah.
