A prison nurse has been permanently removed from the nursing register after her involvement in what authorities have described as a "complex organised drug conspiracy" targeting two correctional facilities. Kymberley Finn, who worked as a nurse within the prison system, participated in a scheme to smuggle contraband, including drugs, into HMP Northumberland and HMP Durham.
Uncovering the Conspiracy
The illicit operation came to light in August 2022 when prison officers discovered a mobile phone in a cell at HMP Northumberland. This device contained a series of drug-related messages that implicated Finn in the wider conspiracy. The investigation revealed that Finn had smuggled the phone into the prison, facilitating communication and coordination for the drug plot.
Legal Consequences and Professional Fallout
In January 2025, Finn admitted to conspiracy to convey prohibited articles into prison. She received a nine-month jail sentence, which was suspended for 18 months, reflecting the severity of her actions. Following this legal outcome, the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) conducted a review of her case.
The NMC ruled that Finn's conduct represented a significant breach of trust, not only undermining the safety and security of the prisons but also bringing the nursing profession into disrepute. As a result, they decided to strike her off the register, effectively ending her career in nursing.
This case highlights the critical importance of integrity among healthcare professionals working in high-security environments, where any lapse can have far-reaching consequences for public safety and institutional trust.
