Oregon Jury Orders PacifiCorp to Pay $305 Million to Wildfire Victims
PacifiCorp Ordered to Pay $305M to Wildfire Victims

An Oregon jury has delivered a significant verdict, ordering utility company PacifiCorp to pay $305 million to 16 victims of the state's devastating 2020 wildfires. This decision marks the latest development in an ongoing class-action lawsuit that encompasses thousands of affected individuals.

Escalating Legal and Financial Consequences

This recent ruling adds to the substantial financial penalties already imposed on PacifiCorp. Following a 2023 trial where the company was found liable for negligently failing to cut power during a windstorm despite explicit warnings from top fire officials, juries have now ordered PacifiCorp to pay over $1 billion in damages to class members. The utility's appeal of the case continues to progress through the state court system, while more than 1,000 additional class members have trials scheduled for 2026 and 2027.

The 2020 Labor Day Weekend Catastrophe

The 2020 Labor Day weekend fires stand among Oregon's worst natural disasters in recorded history. These catastrophic blazes resulted in 11 fatalities, consumed more than 1,560 square miles (4,040 square kilometers) of land, and obliterated thousands of homes across the state. The Multnomah County Circuit Court jury specifically awarded damages to 16 victims of the Santiam Canyon fire in northwest Oregon during their Wednesday deliberations.

Plaintiff Representation and Corporate Response

Shawn Rabin, who led the trial team representing the plaintiffs, emphasized the profound impact of the wildfires in a statement: "We've witnessed firsthand the hardships our clients have faced in the years since the fires. This verdict is a meaningful acknowledgment of the devastation they've endured and reaffirms the irreversible losses they've suffered as a result of the fires."

PacifiCorp responded to the verdict with strong disagreement, characterizing it as an "irresponsible outcome related to damages caused by a fire that PacifiCorp did not start or contribute to as determined by the Oregon Department of Forestry." The utility company stated, "This is why we have been and will continue to challenge these verdicts."

Investigative Findings and Additional Settlements

A report released last year by the Oregon Department of Forestry revealed that 12 of the 19 fires in Santiam Canyon during September 2020 originated from embers of another fire. The remaining seven fires were attributed to downed power lines, though investigators determined these did not contribute to the spread of major fires in the canyon, as residents or firefighters successfully suppressed them.

Separately from the jury verdicts, PacifiCorp has agreed to pay over $2 billion to settle various claims arising from lawsuits related to the 2020 wildfires. This includes a substantial $575 million payment to the federal government for wildfire damages that occurred on federal land in both Oregon and California.

The combination of jury verdicts and settlement agreements continues to shape the legal and financial landscape for PacifiCorp as the company navigates the extensive aftermath of Oregon's devastating 2020 wildfire season.
