Police Launch Manhunt for Bus Pervert in Newcastle
Northumbria Police have launched an urgent manhunt for a man who performed a sex act while staring at a young teenage girl on a bus in Newcastle. The disturbing incident occurred on Friday afternoon, leaving the victim too scared to use public transport or go out.
Disturbing Incident on Bus Service 39
The teenager had been shopping in Newcastle city centre before boarding the number 39 bus to return home. During her journey, she noticed a man in his 20s staring at her intently, which made her feel uncomfortable. Moments later, she realised he was performing a sex act while continuing to stare at her.
"I was on the bus and I was just in my own world then this guy just kept looking at me," the victim recounted. "I was really uncomfortable so I gave him a dirty look. Then a couple of minutes later I could see his hand was in his pants. I shouted at him; 'What are you doing'. I realised all at once then it hit me why he was looking at me."
Failed Attempt to Apprehend Suspect
After the girl shouted at the man, he moved to the front of the bus. The driver immediately pulled over and called police while several male passengers attempted to detain the suspect. Despite their efforts, the man managed to flee the scene before officers arrived.
"I was in complete shock," the teenager said. "I had a total breakdown on the bus. Luckily there were no kids on the bus."
Ongoing Police Investigation
Northumbria Police confirmed they received the report just before 3pm on Friday regarding a disturbance in the Denton Burn area of Newcastle. A police spokeswoman stated: "It was reported that a man had exposed himself on bus service 39, before alighting at West Road and making off on foot towards Whickham View. Officers attended and investigations are ongoing to identify and locate the offender."
The police have issued a specific reference number - NP-20260206-0601 - and are urging anyone with information to come forward. The investigation remains active as authorities work to track down the perpetrator.
Victim's Ongoing Trauma
The young girl has described how the incident continues to affect her daily life. "I can't stop thinking about it. It's constantly on my mind, it's disgusting. I can't go back on the bus now. I have not been able to go out since. I'm worried about going out and seeing him," she explained.
Her experience highlights the broader issue of safety on public transport and the lasting psychological impact such incidents can have on victims. The case has raised concerns about passenger security and the need for increased vigilance on public transportation systems.
