Police Sergeant Stabbed Repeatedly While Shielding Colleague in Knife Attack

In a harrowing incident captured on bodycam footage, a police sergeant was repeatedly stabbed after bravely intervening to protect a fellow officer during a routine traffic stop. The attack occurred in Whalley Range on July 26, 2023, and has since led to significant recognition for the officers involved.

Details of the Violent Assault

Greater Manchester Police Sergeant Tim Ansell was knifed multiple times when he stepped in to shield his colleague, Sergeant Foster, from an armed assailant. The attacker, identified as 27-year-old Jacob Brown, who was hooded, launched a surprise assault from behind with a knife, initially targeting Sergeant Foster.

Bodycam footage from the scene vividly shows Sergeant Ansell staggering to his feet after the stabbing, urgently calling for assistance. He was heard telling a colleague, "Put something on my neck here, I've been f***ing stabbed here." Despite his injuries, Sergeant Ansell courageously positioned himself between the knifeman and Sergeant Frost, preventing further harm to his fellow officer.

Injuries and Immediate Response

Sergeant Ansell sustained severe open wounds to his neck, along with injuries to his arm and body during the repeated stabbings. Demonstrating remarkable resilience, he managed to grab hold of the knifeman's upper body, thwarting any additional attacks. His colleague, PC Marcus Wolstencroft, promptly deployed a Taser to subdue and handcuff Brown, who was subsequently arrested and taken into custody.

Legal Outcome and Recognition

Jacob Brown, who was carrying a blue-handled craft knife and had no connection to the original traffic collision, pleaded guilty to attempted murder and three counts of wounding with intent. In April 2024, he was sentenced to an indefinite hospital order.

All three officers were honoured for their exceptional bravery with multiple awards:

  • The Chief Constable's Annual Bravery Awards
  • The John Egerton Bravery Award from GMP's Police Federation
  • The North West Bravery Award

Sergeant Tim Ansell received further distinction with the King's Commendation for Bravery, presented at St. James' Palace in London on March 25. Greater Manchester Police commended the officers, stating, "The actions of all three officers ultimately saved each other and meant no members of the public suffered any injuries."

This incident underscores the daily risks faced by police officers and highlights the profound courage displayed in the line of duty, ensuring public safety even in the face of extreme violence.
