Alleged Serial Offender Charged with Murder While on Police Bail
Simon Levy, a 40-year-old partially sighted defendant, now stands accused of a horrifying series of crimes against women, including two murders, while repeatedly being released on bail by authorities. In a case that raises serious questions for the police and courts, Levy has been charged with attacks on a total of 13 women.
A Trail of Alleged Violence
The charges against Levy are extensive and shocking. He faces two counts of murder, two counts of rape, a non-fatal strangulation, grievous bodily harm, and ten sexual assaults. These alleged offences took place on the London Underground and even within a prison.
Police believe the alleged predator may have targeted many more victims after he was repeatedly released on bail by British Transport Police, Scotland Yard, and magistrates during various investigations. In an unprecedented move ahead of a trial, Scotland Yard is now publicly appealing to women and girls to come forward if they have evidence of other crimes linked to Levy.
The case took a grim turn when Levy was charged with the murder of Carmenza Trujillo, aged 53. Her body was discovered in a building on the Aylesbury Estate in Southwark on March 17 this year. At the time of this alleged murder, Levy was already on police bail, having been arrested on suspicion of sexually assaulting two women on the Tube in October 2024.
Repeated Bail and Escalating Crimes
The chronology of the case paints a disturbing picture of alleged offending interspersed with court-approved releases. Levy is first believed to have committed a sex attack on a female prison officer in HMP Brixton in April 2022.
A year later, he allegedly molested a woman on the London Underground in October 2023. After his arrest in November 2024 for two other suspected sex attacks at tube stations, he was released on bail. It was during this period of freedom that he allegedly strangled and raped a prostitute on January 21 this year.
A pre-trial hearing at the Old Bailey was told that Levy allegedly refused to pay the sex worker, knocked her to the floor, and jumped on her, breaking her collarbone. He is then accused of raping her while placing his hands over her face, suffocating her until she lost consciousness. She survived the attack.
Levy was arrested on April 1 over Ms Trujillo’s death but was released yet again while officers investigated. While on bail, he is accused of carrying out five sexual assaults on women at various London underground stations between March and May 2025.
On May 3 this year, Levy was charged with carrying out three sexual assaults at tube stations, but a judge released him on bail, ordering him not to travel on public transport. Despite this, he is accused of carrying out a further sex attack at Westminster station on May 29.
The following month, he was charged with breaching his bail conditions after being caught by a police officer on the London Underground on June 20. Astonishingly, a judge decided to release the suspect again.
A Second Murder and Final Remand
Weeks later, the situation escalated tragically. Levy is accused of murdering a second woman, Sheryl Wilkins, 39, on August 28 this year. Her body was found on August 24 by police patrolling a car park in Tottenham, North London.
The Old Bailey heard that the sex worker was found face down, with her head and body covered by a jacket. Although police found bruising and scratches, post-mortem examinations have been unable to determine the cause of death, with one possibility being that she may have been drowned.
Levy was finally arrested on September 4 and remanded in custody after being charged with a raft of offences, including the murder of Ms Wilkins.
Commander Clair Kelland, who leads the Met’s Public Protection Team, stated: ‘As the lead for public protection at the Met, one of our main priorities is to better protect women and girls. The investigation into Simon Levy is one of great complexity... We urge you to come forward and speak to us.’
Levy will face trial on charges of murder, strangulation, grievous bodily harm with intent, and two counts of rape in June next year. A separate trial on January 26 will address nine sexual assaults on the London Underground and the sexual touching of a prison officer in 2022.
